SALEM, Mass. --  Senior Erin Riley (Wakefield, Mass.) netted eight goals to lead Salem State to a 19-9 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Tuesday evening at Alumni Field.

The host Vikings (6-6, 1-3 MASCAC) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on the strength of two Riley tallies, but the visiting Buccaneers (4-7, 1-3 MASCAC) closed back to within two at 6-4 on junior Christina Murphy’s (Forestdale, Mass.) goal with 4:48 remaining in the first half.  Salem State extended its advantage to 9-4 at the break with three markers, including two off the stick of junior Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, Mass.), in the final 2:55 before intermission, and the hosts took control of the contest by netting six of the first eight goals in the second half to take a 15-6 lead on Woodin’s fourth tally of the night with 16:40 to play.  Massachusetts Maritime crept back to within six (15-9) with three markers, including a pair from freshman Meghan Doherty (Malden, Mass.), in a 2:22 span, but the Vikings iced their triumph by netting four goals (three by Riley) in the final 3:28 of action to account for the final margin.

Sophomore Courtney Smith (Peabody, Mass.) added a hat trick in the win for Salem State, which also received a pair of goals and three assists from senior Kristina Conlon (Dracut, Mass.).  Freshman Chelsea Smith (Tewksbury, Mass.) chipped in with a marker and three helpers for the Vikings, who also received a goal from junior Dailey Hancock (Stoughton, Mass.) and an assist off the stick of junior Katie Hart (Beverly, Mass.).
