LARCHMONT, N.Y./LEWISTON, Maine --  The Massachusetts Maritime sailing team enjoyed a highly successful Columbus Day weekend in two different venues in recording a runner-up and two third place finishes in competition at the prestigious Storm Trysail Regatta on Long Island Sound as well as at the Bates Protest Trophy in Maine.

The Buccaneer crew of the J-109, comprised of seniors Philip Scott (Pocasset, Mass.) and Rob Gallagher (Sandwich, Mass.), juniors Bradley Shepherd (Winter Park, Fla.), Ryan Lotti (South Yarmouth, Mass.) and Kyle Scannell (Tierra Verde, Fla./Lakewood) as well as freshman Andrew Gregoire (Charlotte, N.C.), finished second to Maine Maritime for the Storm Trysail championship, as the two teams tied in the final points standings (21 each), but the Mariners claimed the title in the comparison of finishes.  The J-109 was once again hosted by 1979 Academy graduate Rick Lyall and bested crews from Vermont, Cornell, Roger Williams, Michigan and Williams in the competition.

The J-44 crew of seniors Devin Tetzlaff (Forestdale, Mass.), Christopher Morrow (Eugene, Ore.,) and Michael Powers (Peabody, Mass.), juniors Jeffrey Gawrys (Marblehead, Mass.), Eric Pattison (Woodbury, Conn.), Patrick Morrissey (Quincy, Mass.), Graham Philpot (Laconia, N.H./Laconia) and Jason Pollock (Cataumet, Mass.), sophomores Stephen Moore (Andover, Mass.) and Nathaniel Olsen (East Dennis, Mass.) as well as freshman Timothy Dexter (Manchester, Center, Vt.) finished third in their event, bested only by Maine Maritime and Navy while topping squads from Coast Guard, California Maritime, St. Mary’s and New York Maritime.

Massachusetts Maritime placed third of seven teams competing at the Bates Protest Trophy with a score of 27 points, as the duo of freshman Richard Graef (Zionsville, Ind.) and sophomore Leo Connolly (Duxbury, Mass.) took top honors in the B Division with a score of nine points.  The tandem of freshman Anders Straume (Boston, Mass.) and sophomore Andrew Labbe (Warwick, R.I.) finished fifth in the A Division with a score of 18 points, as Bowdoin and Tufts finished as the champion and runner-up, respectively, in the competition.

The Buccaneers will host the Great Herring Pond Open this weekend and are also set to compete at the Tufts Lark Invitational.
