MacVarish Sets Pace As Men's Cross County Posts Ninth Place Finish At University Of New England Invitational

BIDDEFORD, Maine --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country teams recorded respective ninth place team finishes at the University of New England Invitational that took place on Saturday morning in Rotary Park, as the men’s field included 17 squads while the women’s race featured 16 teams.

 

Junior Jake MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) set the pace on the men’s side for the Buccaneers, as he posted a 14th place time of 28:54.6 over the 8K layout, while sophomore Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) was next in 15th place with a time of 29:00 even.  Freshman Nathaniel Decker (Bellbrook, Ohio) followed in 55th place individually with a time of 31:32.2, while sophomores Ryan McNeal (Canton, Ga.) and Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) rounded out Massachusetts Maritime’s scoring with respective finishing times of 32:11.5 and 32:21.1 that were good for 66th and 70th place in a field of 164 competitors.  Host University of New England took top team honors with a score of 38 points, while Wentworth (87) and Endicott (101) followed in the runner-up and third place spots, respectively.  The Buccaneers edged out Maine Maritime by 25 points (198-225) for the ninth place finish.

 

Junior Mara Footit (Wilbraham, Mass.) led the way in the women’s competition for Massachusetts Maritime, as she finished 25th individually over the 5K layout in a time of 21:59.  Senior Shavonne Boyle (Doylestown, Pa.) and sophomore Lexy Halpin (Plymouth, Mass.) were next in 76th and 86th place, respectively, with times of 24:42.5 and 25:13.2, while freshman Myat Smith (Sanford, Fla.) and sophomore Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective times of 28:04 and 29:51 that were good for 120th and 130th place in a field of 151 runners.  The University of New England also captured the team title in the women’s race with 18 points, while Endicott (81) and Gordon (85) followed in the runner-up and third place positions.

 

Both Massachusetts Maritime squads head to North Dartmouth, Mass. next Saturday morning for the UMass Dartmouth Shriners Invitational that begins at 11:15 a.m.
