MacVarish Earns All-Conference Honors As Men's Cross Country Places Fourth At MASCAC Championships

PAXTON, Mass. --  Junior Jake MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) earned all-conference honors for the first time in his career, as his seventh place individual finish helped lead Massachusetts Maritime’s men’s squad to fourth place in the final team standings at the 2015 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships that took place Saturday afternoon at Moore State Park.  Junior Mara Footit (Wilbraham, Mass.) narrowly missed earning all-league accolades on the women’s side, as her 14th place individual finish paced the Buccaneers to a final sixth place standing in this year’s championship race.

 

MacVarish covered the 8K layout in a time of 27:58 in becoming the first all-conference performer on the men’s side in five years for Massachusetts Maritime, which posted a team score of 122 points in the event.  Sophomore Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) followed in 22nd place with a time of 28:58, while freshman Nathaniel Decker (Bellbrook, Ohio) was next in 38th place in a time of 30:23.  Sophomores Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) and Ryan McNeal (Canton, Ga.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 42nd and 43rd place finishing times of 30:36 and 30:38 in a field of 101 competitors, as Fitchburg State claimed the MASCAC team crown with a score of 24 points to best runner-up Westfield State (41) and third-place Bridgewater State (78) in the final standings.

 

Footit finished just 20 seconds shy of earning all-MASCAC honors on the women’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as she covered the 5K course in a time of 20:58 amongst a total field of 96 competitors.  Senior Shavonne Boyle (Doylestown, Pa.) was next in 66th place with a time of 24:06, while freshman Myat Smith (Sanford, Fla.) followed in 85th place with a time of 26:57.  Sophomore Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) and senior Amanda Subenko (Braintree, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 89th and 95th place times of 28:15 and 32:18, as Westfield State captured the MASCAC title once again with a team score of 38 points to best both runner-up Bridgewater State (42) and Worcester State (78) in the final standings.

 

The Massachusetts Maritime men’s squad will close out its 2015 season on Saturday, November 14th by heading to New London, Conn. to participate in the NCAA Division III Regional Championships that will be hosted by Connecticut College beginning at 11:00 a.m.  Today’s MASCAC championships closed out the 2015 Buccaneer women’s schedule.
