Galvin Leads Men's Cross Country To 28th Place Overall Finish At UMass Dartmouth Shriners Invitational

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country squads once again posted solid performances against competition from all divisions on Saturday afternoon at the UMass Dartmouth Shriners Invitational, as the Buccaneer men placed 28th of 43 teams and the Buccaneer women posted a 36th place overall finish in the event.

 

Sophomore Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) set the pace for the second time in three weeks on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as he covered the 8K layout in a time of 27:28.61 to finish 99th in a field of 324 competitors.  Junior Jake MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) was next in 111th place individually with a time of 27:39.11, while the trio of freshman Nathaniel Decker (Bellbrook, Ohio), sophomore Ryan McNeal (Canton, Ga.) and freshman Peter Lowry (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective finishing times of 30:10.15, 30:24.08 and 30:30.20 that were good for 221st, 231st and 235th places.  Brandeis took top honors in the team competition with a score of 93 points, while East Stroudsburg (116) and Connecticut College (125) followed in the runner-up and third place spots.  Massachusetts Maritime bested Maine Maritime for a second straight week in competition, as the Buccaneers finished fourth among MASCAC schools entered in the event.

 

Junior Mara Footit (Wilbraham, Mass.) once again led the way on the women’s side for the Buccaneers, as she posted a time of 20:54.98 over the 5K layout to finish 128th in a field of 315 competitors.  Senior Shavonne Boyle (Doylestown, Pa.) was next in 268th place with a time of 24:21.77, while sophomore Lexy Halpin (Plymouth, Mass.), freshman Myat Smith (Sanford, Fla.) and sophomore Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) rounded out Massachusetts Maritime’s scoring on the day with respective times of 25:02.36, 27:11.33 and 27:14.60 to finish in 274th, 294th and 295th places.  Brandeis also claimed the crown in the women’s race with 49 points, as East Stroudsburg (79) bested Connecticut College (80) by one point to take runner-up honors.

 

Both Massachusetts Maritime squads travel to Chicopee, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete at the Elms Blazer Invitational that begins at 11:00 a.m.
