NORTON, Mass. --  Senior Will Compton (Deering, N.H.) netted five goals and an assist for six points to lead Wheaton to a 15-5 Pilgrim Lacrosse League victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Mirrione Stadium.

 

The host Lyons (7-7, 4-2 Pilgrim) jumped out to 4-0 first quarter advantage before extended that margin to five on Compton’s tally 52 seconds into the second stanza, and after the visiting Buccaneers (5-9, 1-4 Pilgrim) crept back to within 6-2 on markers by sophomores Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) and Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.), Wheaton collected the final two markers of the half, including a man-up tally by senior Billy McNamara (Mansfield, Mass.), to take an 8-2 edge at the break.  The Lyons scored three of the first four goals after intermission in taking a 12-4 lead into the final 15 minutes of play, as the hosts received two man-up tallies from Compton midway through the final frame to ice their triumph.

 

Senior Sean Doherty (East Lyme, Conn.) added a hat trick and two assists in the win for Wheaton, which also received a hat trick and a helper from McNamara as well as a marker and two assists from sophomore Sean Finn (Kennebunk, Maine).  Junior Cam Hanlon (Hanson, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Lyons, who also received tallies from sophomore Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass.) and freshman Alex Keiver (North Andover, Mass.) as well as an assist off the stick of freshman Kyle Rumberger (Hyannis, Mass.).

 

Freudenberg finished with a hat trick and an assist in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a goal and an assist from Prowse as well as a tally from sophomore Dillon Jones (Sagamore Beach, Mass.), while senior John Hojnoski (West Springfield. Mass.) and freshman Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.) also collected assists on the day for the Buccaneers.

 

Junior Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I.) picked up the win in goal for Wheaton with 12 saves in 48-plus minutes of play, while junior Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) made 15 stops in 52 minutes of action in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a pair of saves from freshman James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.).  The Lyons outshot the Buccaneers by a 47-28 margin for the match while holding a 16-7 edge in face-offs.

 

Massachusetts Maritime hosts MIT in its season and Pilgrim Lacrosse League finale on Monday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., as that match will be dedicated in memory of fallen MIT Police Officer Sean Collier.  Wheaton will await word of its opponent in the upcoming Pilgrim Lacrosse League playoffs, which begin on Wednesday afternoon.
