NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Freshman Nicklaus Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) netted four goals and an assist for five points to lead UMass Dartmouth to an 8-3 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening at Cressy Field.
Prozinski and sophomore Riley Baxter (Groton, Mass.) staked the host Corsairs (8-1) to an early 2-0 advantage just 1:32 into the contest, but freshman Anthony Kurylak (Rye, N.H.) sliced the visiting Buccaneers’ (2-7) deficit in half less than three minutes later. Prozinski added two more first half markers to give UMass Dartmouth a 5-2 lead at the break, and his tally midway through the third stanza extended that edge to four heading into the final 15 minutes of action. Sophomore Connor Gaffney (Andover, Mass.) added a pair of insurance goals in the opening 8:13 of the fourth frame to ice the hosts’ triumph that extended their winning streak to three straight.
Baxter finished with a goal and an assist in the victory for UMass Dartmouth, which also received a tally from junior Justin Lawless (Quincy, Mass.). Junior Adam Niden (Walpole, Mass.) notched two assists in the win for the Corsairs, who also received single helpers off the sticks of junior Jordan MacPherson (Westwood, Mass.) and freshman Alex Lucas (Brookfield, Mass.). Kurylak netted a pair of goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a marker and helper from sophomore Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) as well as single assists from sophomores Jack Forcier (Medford, Mass.) and Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.).
Junior Nick Thayer (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for UMass Dartmouth with a nine-save effort, while junior Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) made 14 stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Corsairs outshot the Buccaneers by a 36-28 margin for the match while holding a 9-6 edge in face-offs.
