PAXTON, Mass. --  Sophomores Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) and Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.) each notched hat tricks to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 7-5 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Anna Maria Tuesday afternoon at Amcat Field.

The visiting Buccaneers (1-0) trailed by a 2-0 margin with just over eight minutes remaining in the opening half of their season opener, but tallies by Freudenberg and freshman Anthony Kurylak (Rye, N.H.) enabled Massachusetts Maritime to forge a 2-2 draw at the break.  Freudenberg completed his hat trick with markers that came 6:04 apart in the third stanza, and after Prowse collected his first tally of the day with 48 seconds remaining in the quarter to cap a five-goal Buccaneer run, freshman Lucas Stralka (East Greenwich, R.I.) sliced the host Amcats’ (1-2) deficit back to a pair heading into the final frame with his first collegiate marker.  Prowse completed his hat trick with a pair of fourth quarter goals that extended the visitors’ lead to three on two occasions, as senior Rod Henriques (Saugus, Mass.) also tallied twice in the final 15 minutes for Anna Maria, including a goal with 1:06 remaining that enabled the hosts to once again close back to within two but get no closer.

Freudenberg added an assist for finish with four points in the triumph for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received three assists from freshman Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.) as well as a helper off the stick of Kurylak, who finished with two points in his inaugural collegiate contest.  Henriques collected a hat trick in the setback for Anna Maria, which also received a goal and an assist from Stralka as well as a helper off the stick of freshman Scott Henry (Warwick, R.I.).

Junior Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Massachusetts Maritime with a seven-save effort, while freshman Joshua Girratano (Warwick, R.I.) made 13 stops in the setback for Anna Maria as the Buccaneers outshot the Amcats by a 36-14 margin for the match while forcing 41 turnovers.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Throggs Neck, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon to take on SUNY-Maritime in the battle for the Fifth Annual Maritime Cup that begins at 1:00 p.m., while Anna Maria hosts Nichols in a non-league outing on Thursday evening at Amcat Field beginning at 6:00 p.m.
