Hunt Nets 100th Career Goal As Women's Lacrosse Drops 14-5 MASCAC Decision To Worcester State

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Senior Alaina Martin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) netted four goals and an assist, while freshman Kelly Austin (Brimfield, Mass.) added a hat trick and a pair of helpers to lead Worcester State to a 14-5 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.
The visiting Lancers (3-6, 1-1 MASCAC) jumped out to a pair of three goal leads in the opening 11-plus minutes of play, but the host Buccaneers (0-6, 0-2 MASCAC) closed back to within a pair (5-3) on junior Stephanie Hunt’s (Brookfield, Conn.) 100th career goal with 6:38 remaining in the half. Tallies by Martin and Austin in the final 2:45 of action staked Worcester State to a 7-3 advantage at the break, and after the teams traded scores in the opening 7:15 following intermission, the visitors iced their triumph with six unanswered goals (two by Martin) in just over nine minutes time.
Junior Mackenzie Little (Marlboro, Mass.) and freshman Kaylee Krajewski (Holyoke, Mass.) each tallied twice in the win for the Lancers, who received a marker and three assists from junior Alexis Vecchiarelli (Agawam, Mass.) as well as a goal and helper from sophomore Kylie Farrell (Sutton, Mass.). Freshman Sarah Cohan (Lowell, Mass.) also scored on the night for Worcester State, which received a pair of assists off the stick of senior Angelina Sutherland (Tyngsboro, Mass.).
Hunt finished with four goals as part of her milestone evening in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a marker off the stick of junior Brianna Pingree (Mashpee, Mass.). Senior Krissy Pessa (Walpole, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for the Lancers with a seven save effort, while junior Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) made 14 stops for the Buccaneers as Worcester State held a 39-16 edge in shots (28-11 on goal) and won 17 of 21 draws for the contest.
Massachusetts Maritime will be idle until next Saturday, April 15th when the Buccaneers travel to Westfield, Mass. to take on Westfield State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing that begins at 6:00 p.m., while Worcester State heads to North Dartmouth, Mass. on Tuesday evening to square off with UMass Dartmouth in a non-league match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
