Crew Squads Close Out Regular Season With Fifth Place Performances At Clark, Greater Boston Invitationals

WORCESTER, Mass./LOWELL, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime crew teams wrapped up regular season action over the weekend with competition on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday afternoon against Amherst, Bowdoin, Connecticut College and host Clark before heading up to the Merrimack River on Sunday for the Greater Boston Invitational hosted by UMass Lowell.

 

Both varsity fours posted fifth place finishes in competition at Clark, as the men’s varsity four comprised of freshman coxswain Sophia Segatore (Plymouth, Mass.), senior Matthew Mourey (Franklin, Mass.), junior Alex Jagielski (Guilford, Conn.), sophomore Liam Barry (Wellesley, Mass.) and freshman Ryan Skavis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) posted a time of 7:40.1.  The women’s varsity four comprised of sophomore coxswain Jillian Stronk (Cheshire, Conn.), senior Gretchen Kramer (Stafford, Va.), junior Janeen Manghis, sophomore Jessie Goodhue (Hyde Park, Mass.) and freshman Brenda Weeks (Bourne, Mass.) posted a time of 9:58.1, as Bowdoin took top honors in both races.

 

The men’s novice four comprised of freshman coxswain James Belbin (Carver, Mass.) and freshmen Adam Butters (Gales Ferry, Conn.), Andrew Murphy (Randolph, Mass.), Eric DeMarines (Pepperell, Mass.) and Brody Forbes (Hanson, Mass.) placed fourth in the event with a time of 8:12.3, as Bowdoin also claimed the title in that race.

 

At Sunday’s Greater Boston Invitational, the women’s varsity four comprised of senior coxswain Lauren DeNapoli (Boston, Mass.), Kramer, juniors Melanie Holder (Calidonio, Panama) and Kelsie Brien (Methuen, Mass.), along with freshman Charleen Klangos, finished fifth with a time of 9:34 in a race won by the host River Hawks, while the men’s novice four consisting of coxswain Belbin, Butters, Murphy and freshmen Evan Nolan (Kingston, Mass.) and Mitchell Bovarnick (Medfield, Mass.) placed fifth with a time of 78:53 in competition claimed by UConn.

 

Massachusetts Maritime will compete next weekend at the New England Championships.
