Men's & Women's Crew Cap Fall Slates With Impressive Performances At Amherst Fall Invitational

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.--  Both Massachusetts Maritime crew teams closed out their respective fall campaigns with solid performances at the Amherst Fall Invitational, as the Buccaneers entered a total of seven boats in the competition.

Massachusetts Maritime fielded four shells in the men’s novice four, as the Buccaneer “A” tandem of freshman coxswain Jeremy Heinrich (Atlanta, Ga.) and fellow freshmen Christopher Roach (West Wareham, Mass.), Andrew Balmaceda (Fairfax, Va.), Evan Nolan (Kingston, Mass.) and Peter Schultz (Wilbraham, Mass.) took top honors in competition with Amherst and Connecticut College, finishing with a six second margin of victory over the host Lord Jeffs.

The men’s novice four “B” group of freshman coxswain Nicholas Laroche (Westfield, Mass.), along with sophomore Ian Monfils (Hanson, Mass.) and freshmen Peter MacDonald (North Dighton, Mass.), Brody Forbes (Hanson, Mass.) and Andrew Murphy (Randolph, Mass.), placed fourth in the competition, while the “C” tandem of freshman coxswain James Belbin (Carver, Mass.) and fellow freshmen Christopher Dwyer, Mikhail Pages (Watertown, Mass.), Adam Butters (Gales Ferry, Conn.) and Lawson Bundrant (Shoreline, Wash.) placed fifth.  Massachusetts Maritime’s “D” boat of freshman coxswain Christopher Nelson and fellow freshmen Genaro Sarno (Springfield, Mass.), Hugh Largey (Raynham, Mass.), Judson Yerkes (West Barnstable, Mass.) and Connor Corsi (Three Rivers, Mass.) posted a sixth place performance on the day.

The women’s novice eight, which consisted of sophomore coxswain Jillian Stronk (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshmen Cassie Sanderson (North Dighton, Mass.), Cassandra Swanson (Quincy, Mass.), Michaela Curtin, Emma Murray (Westfield, Mass.), Sara Petriella (Hull, Mass.), Jenna Breault (Buzzards Bay, Mass.), Sophia Segatore (Plymouth, Mass.) and Amanda Subenko (Braintree, Mass.) posted a second place finish in the event, as the Buccaneers were bested by Smith by a close margin.

Massachusetts Maritime’s men’s varsity four of sophomore coxswain John Hubert (Trumbull, Conn.), along with seniors Josh Lamm (North Andover, Mass.) and Matthew Mourey (Franklin, Mass.) as well as juniors Maxwell Horton (Malden, Mass.) and Alex Jagielski (Guilford, Conn.), placed fifth in competition that was won by Amherst, while the men’s second varsity of consisting of senior coxswain Lauren Denapoli (Boston, Mass.), sophomores Ryan Gilliland (Barnstable, Mass.) and Liam Barry (Wellesley, Mass.) as well as freshmen Gerard Juliano (Duxbury, Mass.) and Ryan Skavis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) placed second behind the host Lord Jeffs.

Both Buccaneer squads will return to action in late March for the start of the spring portion of the 2012-13 season.
