SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Junior Tom Hurley (Goffstown, N.H.) scored five goals and added two assists for seven points to lead Springfield to a 23-3 New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.
Senior Anthony Zabielski (Gansevoort, N.Y.) added four scores on the day for the host Pride (6-2, 2-0 NEWMAC), who jumped out to a 10-0 halftime advantage in netting the first 13 markers of the contest. Senior Ty Daugstrup (Rocky River, Ohio) chipped in with a hat trick and an assist for Springfield, which received a pair of tallies and a helper from sophomore Ben Shea (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) to go with two goals from senior Tim Cozens (Ridgefield, Conn.). Sophomore Ray McCarthy (Somers, Conn.) netted a goal and two assists for the Pride, who also received a marker and helper each from sophomores Cameron Glover (Brunswick, Maine) and Cole Pecora (North Haven, Conn.) along with two assists each from senior Scott Rogers (Acton, Mass.) and sophomore Lucas Habich (Little Silver, N.J.). Junior Chris Cunnington (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and freshmen Bennett Nelin (Setauket, N.Y.) and Isaac Chase (Longmeadow, Mass.) each scored as well for the hosts, who received single assists off the sticks of senior Dom Abate (Beverly, Mass.) and juniors Duncan Preston (South Portland, Maine) and Anthony Febbo (Yonkers, N.Y.).
Senior Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.), sophomore Ted Powers (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshman Benjamin Avakian (Bourne, Mass.) all tallied in the setback for the visiting Buccaneers (4-3, 0-1 NEWMAC), which received two assists from junior Keaghan Bartley (Richmond, Va.). Junior Jake Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with a five-save effort over the first 38 minutes of play for Springfield, which received seven stops from sophomore Cole Finerty (Kensington, N.H.). Sophomore Michael Dolan (McLean, Va.) recorded 16 saves in 44-plus minutes of play in net for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received three stops from fellow sophomore Jeffrey Statile (Ipswich, Mass.). The Pride outshot the Buccaneers by a 58-19 margin overall and forced 31 turnovers on the day.
Massachusetts Maritime heads to North Dartmouth, Mass. on Wednesday evening to take on UMass Dartmouth in a non-league outing that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Springfield travels to Middlebury, Vt. on Wednesday afternoon to square off with Middlebury in a non-league clash beginning at 5:00 p.m.
