Volleyball: Bucs Win over Dean to Split Season Series

FRANKLIN, Mass -- The Buccaneers traveled to Dean College on Wednesday evening for a non-conference match with the Bulldogs. In the second match between the two team this season, the Bucs got revenge after losing on their home court earlier this month by winning a hard fought 3-1 match over Dean. This is the first road win for the Bucs at Dean College since 2016.

On The Court

For the Bucs

  • Freshman Shayla Narodowg led the Bucs offensively with eight kills in the win. Freshman Keira Whalen and sophomore captain Marlo Stark each had seven kills. Junior Izabella Mackintosh and freshman Chloe Johnson each added six kills. 
  • Whalen had a career-high 22 assists in the match.
  • Sophomore libero Audrey Manning recorded a match-high six aces. Mackintosh had four of her own.
  • The Bucs posted a .101 hitting percentage in the match, led by Whalen at .545.
  • Defensively, Whalen led the team with 15 digs. Stark added 12 digs of her own.

For the Bulldogs

  • Sari Albury posted a match-high 15 kills. Hope Laiter had 11 kills in the loss.
  • Bella Driscoll posted 30 assists to lead all players.
  • Caitlin Cooper led the 'Dogs with five aces. 
  • Dean racked up a .187 hitting percentage in the loss with Albury leading the way at .412.
  • Defensively, Mandi Payne led the match with 17 digs. 

How It Happened

Dean controlled the first set early taking a 4-1 lead out of the gate. Maritime slowly cut away at the lead and tied the game up at 7-7. With Mackintosh on the serve, the Bucs went on a 5-0 run to take a four-point 11-7 lead. A lead they would not lose again in the game. Maritime regrew their lead to as many as seven points at 19-12. With the score 22-15, Dean made a comeback attempt, closing the gap to two points in a 5-0 run. From 22-20, the Buccaneers scored the final three points and won the game, 25-20, to take a 1-0 lead in the match on a ball handling error by the Bulldogs.

In set two, Dean started it off 3-0. Maritime closed the gap and took a lead on a 6-0 run to go up 8-4. Later, still leading by three, 11-8, Skyler Raskevitz for Dean held the ball for six points of a 7-0 run for the Bulldogs, including three aces, to regain the lead for her team, 15-11. The Bucs couldn't catch back up from there in the game with Dean getting a kill from Cooper to finish off the set, 25-19, evening the match at 1-1.

Set three was a marathon for the teams. Dean went up 10-4 early but they watched the lead shrink away to a 13-13 tie. Though Dean went back up three points, the Buccaneers battled back to 18-18. The teams traded points from there, tying at 21-21, 22-22, 24-24, and 25-25. With the score knotted at 25-25, The Bucs got a gift in the form of a Dean service error. Up 26-25, Whalen setup Mackintosh to kill off the game, 27-25, and give the Bucs a 2-1 lead in the match.

In set four, neither team wanted to go home with the L with the teams keeping within three points of each other, swapping leads and typing at 10-10. Dean looked like they may tie the match up at 2-2 as they took a five-point, 18-13, lead. The Buccaneers chipped away and brought the game even at 21-21. At 22-22, Maritime scored the final three points, capping off the game with a Whalen kill to win 25-22, and take the match three games to one.
