Buccaneers Hang Tough in Loss to Bison

DUDLEY, Mass -- Coming off of a win over Anna Maria on Saturday, the Buccaneer traveled to Nichols College to play their first road game of the season against a good Bison squad. Nichols entered the match with a 3-0 record with the Bucs coming in at 1-1. The young Buccaneers fell in straight sets, 3-0.

 

The Basics

On The Court

For The Bucs

  • Marlo Stark led the Bucs offensively with six kills in the match. Chloe Johnson was on her heels with five of her own. Keira Whalen and Shayla Narodowg each had three kill of their own.
  • Audrey Manning led the team in assists with nine. Whalen added four and senior captain Izzy Miazga recorded three.
  • Miazga had 11 digs in the match to lead all players. Stark recorded six.
  • Stark and Johnson combined for a block for the Bucs.
  • Maritime totaled 20 kills, four aces, 16 assists and 25 digs in the match.

For The Bison

  • Haylee Granato and Luna Colozzo led all players with eight kills each in the win. Sydney Ball added six kills to the scoreline.
  • Kya Burdier recorded a match-high 19 assists. Ruby St. Onge had 11 assists of her own.
  • Jenna Savoie led the Bison in digs with seven. 
  • Granato had two block assists in the match. Colozzo and Burdier assisted on the two blocks.
  • Savoie had four service aces to lead all players. 

 

How it Happened

Maritime opened the scoring and took a 3-0 lead to begin the match. Nichols erased the deficit and went on a 6-0 run to take a 6-3 advantage. The Bucs got three points back but not before the Bison reached the 10-point mark and led 10-6. Nichols slowly pulled away, leading by as many as seven at one point. The Bucs pulled back within three in the later stages of the first set and hung around with Nichols until the home team finished off the first set, winning 25-19.

Down a set, Maritime struck first in the second set again. Though it was short lived, the teams traded points and the Buccaneers kept the Bison close, within three points, until the midway point of the set. With the score 13-10 Bison, Nichols began to open their lead and pull away. After a stark kill to make the score 21-16, Nichols went on to win the next four points to take a 2-0 lead in the match, winning the set 25-16.

In the third set, Nichols pulled away quickly early on. The hosts took a 14-2 lead over Maritime. While the Bucs began to score points and dig out of the hole, it wasn't enough as they could only get to 11 points in the set. Down 22-11, the Bison scored the final three points to win the set, 25-11, and the match, 3-0.

The Buccaneers are home on Saturday, September 10th for a tri-match with Dean and Fisher beginning at 11am.
