Buccaneers Split Home Opening Tri-Match with Anna Maria and Curry

BUZZARDS BAY, MA -- The Buccaneer volleyball team hosted Curry and Anna Maria in a season opening tri-match for all three teams at the Clean Harbors Center on Saturday. The Bucs fell to Curry in a competitive first match, 3-0, and came back from one set down to beat the AMCATS 3-1.

 

Match Two

The Basics

Final: Buccaneers 3, AMCATS 1 (18-25, 25-17, 30-28, 25-17)

Records: Maritime (1-1)

One The Court

For The Bucs

  • Sophomore captain Marlo Stark was deadly for the Bucs in the win. She recorded a match-high 12 kills with a Buc best 21 digs. 
  • Senior Alex Smith also recorded double digit kills and digs with 10 kills and 11 digs. 
  • Audrey Manning tallied a game-high 22 assists. She also had double-digit digs with 13 and was second in the match with six service aces. 
  • Freshman Keira Whalen had a match-high seven service aces and seven digs. 
  • Shayla Narodowg had eight kills and a solo block in the match. Freshman Chloe Johnson recorded two block assists with Manning and Smith in the win.

For The AMCATS

  • Suzette Scheer and Ashley Sheehan led AMC with six kills each in the loss. Sarah Burt added four of her own with Ryann Hassett and Serena Davis each picking up three.
  • Julia Tarantino led the team with 11 assists and Isabella Sand had eight helpers. 
  • Serena Davis was dominant defensively with 29 digs in the match. Scheer had 15 as well.
  • Sheehan had the only block of the match for the AMCATS.

How It Happened

After losing to Curry shortly before taking the court against the Bucs, Anna MAri came out hungry in the first set. They opened up a 5-1 lead early though the Bucs closed it to a 5-4 score shortly thereafter. The AMCATS never lost the lead in the first set, even going on a five point run to go up 15-10 midway through the game. Slowly pulling away, the 'Cats took the set 25-18 over their hosts.

In set two, The Buccaneers grabbed the momentum early, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. With Maritime firing on all cylinders, they shot out to a seven point lead, 15-8. Like Anna Maria in the first set, the Bucs never lost the lead and closed out the game with a 5-0 run to win the set, 25-17, and tie the match at 1-1.

Set three was a match for the ages, an instant classic. The Bucs kept the momentum going as they ran out to a 4-0 lead. Anna Maria then went on a 4-1 run to close the gap to one point. The Bucs pulled ahead and it was looking like they had full control of the match up 14-8 halfway through the game. That's when the AMCATS went on an 8-0 run with Sand serving to take a 16-14 advantage. Maritime closed it to one before another run, this time 4-0, by AMC, to take a 20-16 lead. The Bucs didn't give up that easily, scratching their way back to a 23-23 tie.The squads traded points and no one wanted to give this one away. 25-25 turned into 28-28. Then, the Bucs got a block from Johnson and Manning to go up 29-28 and Stark saw the Bucs out to the endgame with a kill to win the set, 30-28, and give the Bucs a 2-1 lead over the AMCATS going into the fourth set.

In game four, the 'Cats pounced on the Bucs going up 5-0 to start, then 8-1. The Buccaneers slowly sailed back into the game closing the gap to four, 12-8. That was followed by a 5-0 run that gave the Bucs a 13-12 lead. Later in the game, the Buccaneers had another run, this time a 6-0 run to go up 21-17. That turned into a 10-1 run by the hosts and the Buccaneers closed out game four, 25-17, and the match, 3-1, to earn their first win of the 2022 season.

  • Lauren Guzman was outstanding with 17 kills and 10 digs in the win. 
  • Brooke Reissfelder picked up 28 assists in the match.
  • Avia Fraine led the way defensively with 19 digs. Haley Ferrara added 11.
  • Lexie Jenkins and Jess Sullivan combined for the team's lone block.

 

How It Happened

Though the first set went to Curry, 25-14, the Bucs, in their first set of the season, Kept the score within three points most of the set. Maritime tied the game at 11 all midway through but never led in the game. After the 11 knot, Curry went on a 13-3 run to close out the first set.

In set two, it was all Colonels. They jumped out to an 8-1 lead that the Bucs closed to a two-point deficit, 9-7. Curry went on to score the next seven points, doubling up Maritime 16-8. From there, the teams traded points with the Bucs keeping pace with the guests. The set ended 25-16 with Curry outscoring the Bucs 9-7 after the 16-8 score.

Curry closed out the match in set three but not as easily as they hoped. The Colonels went out to a 13-2 advantage and the Buccaneers dug their way out of the hold going on a 10-3 run to make the score 16-12. Curry went on to win five of the next six points that Maritime countered with a three-point run of their own. Up 21-16, Curry outscored the Bucs 4-3 in the last seven serves to win the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-0.

The Buccaneers are on the road on Wednesday, September 7th against Nichols College.
