GAME #2 FINAL:       DANIEL WEBSTER 10, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 1 (6 INNINGS)

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Abigail Goslin (Wrentham, Mass.) belted three inside-the-park home runs and drove in 11 runs overall to lead Daniel Webster to a sweep of a non-league college softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 14-9 in the opener and 10-1 in the nightcap in games played at Alison Rollins Field.

Goslin rapped out two homers and drove in seven runs in the lid-lifter for the visiting Eagles (2-6), who jumped out to a 6-0 second inning lead before the host Buccaneers (1-7) closed back to within two in the bottom of the frame on a three-run triple off the bat of sophomore Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.).  Goslin’s grand slam in the fourth gave Daniel Webster a 10-4 edge, and after Murphy’s two-run single in the bottom half of the inning narrowed Massachusetts Maritime’s gap to 10-6, the visitors iced their opening triumph with four more runs in the fifth highlighted by sophomore Megan Blongy’s (Rutland, Vt.) two-run double.  Freshman Rachel Gardner (Bourne, Mass.) accounted for the hosts’ final three runs by scoring on a wild pitch and rapping out a two-run single, as Goslin struck out eight in the opener to pick up her first victory of the year inside the circle.  Freshman Taylor Dill (Bellingham, Mass.) added three hits and a pair of RBI as part of an eight-hit attack for Daniel Webster in the first contest, while Murphy rapped out three hits and drove in a career-high five runs for the Buccaneers.  Senior Brittany Driscoll (Spencer, Mass.) chipped in with two hits as part of a seven-hit Massachusetts Maritime opening game attack, while sophomore Carli Thomas (Brewster, Mass.) struck out eight in suffering the setback inside the circle.

The Eagles overcame an early 1-0 deficit with a four-run second inning outburst to take the lead for good in the nightcap, and Goslin provided the remaining runs of the day for Daniel Webster with an RBI triple in the third and her third round-tripper of the day (a three-run shot) in the sixth.  Goslin recorded three more hits and picked up her second win of the afternoon with two strikeouts for the visitors, who also received two more hits from Dill.  Thomas plated Massachusetts Maritime’s lone second game tally on a throwing error, as Gardner, Driscoll and freshman Brooke Miles (Lynn, Mass.) each collected hits for the Buccaneers.  Thomas allowed just one earned run and recorded a strikeout in once again going the distance inside the circle for the hosts.

Massachusetts Maritime opens Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon by entertaining Worcester State in a league twinbill at Alison Rollins Field beginning at Noon, while Daniel Webster hosts Bay Path in its New England Collegiate Conference opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Nashua, N.H. that begins at 1:00 p.m.
