BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --  Freshman Kacie Carvalho (Fairhaven, Mass.) rapped out four hits and drove in four runs to lead Bridgewater State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 21-1 in the opener and 9-0 in the nightcap in five inning games played Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Park.

The host Bears (21-13, 9-3 MASCAC) took control of the opener by overcoming an early 1-0 deficit with 15 tallies in the bottom of the second, and Bridgewater State plated five runs in its first at-bat of the nightcap en route to the sweep.  Carvalho had two hits and drove in three run in the lid-lifter for the Bears, who also received three hits and five RBI from sophomore Alexandra Wright (Lakeville, Mass.).  Freshman Jenny Heller (Taunton, Mass.) also collected three hits in the opener for the winners, who received two hits each from juniors Tara McCann (Fall River, Mass.) and Morgan Cox (Dennis Port, Mass.).  Junior Samantha LoPilato (Medford, Mass.) also drove in a pair in the first contest for Bridgewater State in support of junior Kelly McCarthy (Burlington, Mass.), who scattered two hits and struck out 11 to improve to 17-5 inside the circle on the season.

The visiting Buccaneers (3-21, 0-12 MASCAC) took their 1-0 lead with two outs in the top of the first on a solo homer by sophomore Carli Thomas (Brewster, Mass.), who struck out one in going the route inside the circle for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a single off the bat of sophomore Sarah Monteiro (North Falmouth, Mass.).

Carvalho, LoPilato, Cox, McCann and freshman Rebecca Uschmann (Feeding Hills, Mass.) each had two hits to account for all 10 of the Bears’ nightcap safeties in support of junior Kathleen Bailey (Bayport, N.Y.), who struck out nine in pick up her fourth win of the season.  Monteiro accounted for the visitors’ hit with a fourth inning single up the middle for the Buccaneers, as Thomas fanned a pair in once again going the distance inside the circle for Massachusetts Maritime.
