MacVarish Leads Men's Cross Country To 20th Place Finish At UMass Dartmouth Shriners Invitational

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country teams recorded solid performances at the UMass Dartmouth Shriners Invitational on Saturday afternoon, as the Buccaneer men placed 20th of 34 teams in the event while the Buccaneer women finished 34th overall in the competition.

 

Sophomore Jake MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) led the way on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as he covered the five mile layout in a time of 26:39.10 that was good for 58th place in a field of 255 runners.  Freshman Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) was next in 99th place with a time of 27:28.31, while freshman Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) and seniors Brenton Andrews (Hubbardston, Mass.) and Tyler Brady (Woburn, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Buccaneers with respective 127th, 145th and 161st place finishing times of 28:03.53, 28:27.30 and 28:41.48.  Franklin Pierce took top honors in the event with a team score of 50 points, while WPI (100) and Brandeis (105) followed in the runner-up and third place spots. 

 

Sophomore Mara Footit (Wilbraham, Mass.) set the pace for Massachusetts Maritime on the women’s side, as she covered the 5K layout in a time of 20:28.64 to place 113th out of 272 runners in the competition.  Junior Shavonne Boyle (Doylestown, Pa.) was next in 225th place with a time of 23:22.09, while freshmen Lexy Halpin (Plymouth, Mass.), Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) and sophomore Celeste Menard (Annandale, Va.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 255th, 257th and 266th place finishes in times of 25:42.57, 25:59.03 and 27:02.18.  East Stroudsburg took the team title with a score of 93 points, while SUNY-New Paltz (113) and Connecticut College (143) posted runner-up and third place finishes.

 

Both Massachusetts Maritime squads head to Chicopee, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete at the Elms Blazer Invitational that begins at 11:30 a.m.
