MacVarish, Galvin Lead Men's Cross Country To Third Place Finish At CCRI Tri-State Invitational

LINCOLN, R.I. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country teams recorded top five performances for a second straight week on Saturday afternoon, as the Buccaneer men placed third of 10 teams while the Buccaneer women were fifth of eight squads competing at the CCRI Tri-State Invitational.

 

Sophomore Jake MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) set the pace on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as he finished fourth in a field of 103 runners with a time of 27:49.38 over the 8K layout.  Freshman Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) was next in 10th place with a time of 28:31.87, while freshman Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) and seniors Tyler Brady (Woburn, Mass.) and Brenton Andrews (Hubbardston, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring in 15th, 17th and 30th place with respective times of 29:17.51, 28:28.94 and 30:13.16.  Massachusetts Maritime topped the other three Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference squads competing in the event, as the Buccaneers posted a team score of 75 points to trail only champion Wentworth (34) and runner-up Eastern Connecticut (63).  Bridgewater State finished 21 points in back of the Buccaneers in fourth place, while Worcester State (126) and Framingham State (238) posted respective sixth and seventh place finishes.

 

Sophomore Mara Footit (Wilbraham, Mass.) led the way once again on the women’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as she finished 11th in a field of 72 runners with a time of 21:17.16 over the 5K course.  Junior Shavonne Boyle (Doylestown, Pa.) was next in 44th place with a time of 24:19.14, while freshmen Lexy Halpin (Plymouth, Mass.) and Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.), along with sophomore Celeste Menard (Annandale, Va.), rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 59th, 61st and 62nd place finishing times of 26:33.93, 26:55.19 and 27:26.33.  Salve Regina took top team honors with a score of 29 points to outdistance runner-up Eastern Connecticut (59) and third-place Bridgewater State (73).

 

The Massachusetts Maritime women’s squad heads to Chestnut Hill, Mass. on Thursday afternoon to participate in the four-team Pine Manor Invitational beginning at 4:00 p.m., while the Buccaneer men’s team travels to Westfield, Mass. next Saturday afternoon to participate in the Westfield State James Earley Invitational that begins at Noon.
