MacVarish Sets Pace With Sixth Place Finish As Men's Cross Country Earns Runner-Up Spot At Elms Blazer Classic

CHICOPEE, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country squads recorded top five team finishes on Saturday afternoon at the Elms Blazer Classic, as the Buccaneer men were the runner-up to Trinity in the competition while the Buccaneer women placed fifth of 16 schools in the event.

 

Sophomore Jake MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) set the pace once again on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as he finished sixth individually in a field of 96 runners with a time of 28:39 over the 8K layout.  Freshmen Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) and Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) followed in 10th and 15th place, respectively, with times of 29:41 and 30:38, while seniors Brenton Andrews (Hubbardston, Mass.) and Tyler Brady (Woburn, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 18th and 22nd place finishing times of 31:03 and 31:17.  Trinity placed all five of its scorers in the top nine to finish with 21 points to top Massachusetts Maritime’s runner-up total of 55 points, while Johnson & Wales finished third with 63 points.

 

Sophomore Mara Footit (Wilbraham, Mass.) led the way for a second straight week on the women’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as she posted an eighth place individual finish in a field of 99 runners with a time of 26:33 over the 6K layout.  Junior Shavonne Boyle (Doylestown, Pa.) and freshman Lexy Halpin (Plymouth, Mass.) followed in 40th and 66th place, respectively, with times of 30:58 and 34:04, while freshmen Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) and Julia Staula (Sharon, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 71st and 76th place times of 34:39 and 35:48.  Trinity also took top honors in the women’s competition by placing all five of its scorers in the top six to record a team score of 16 points, as Johnson & Wales (69 points) and host Elms (77 points) finished in the runner-up and third place spots.

 

Both Massachusetts Maritime squads travel to Providence, R.I. next Saturday morning to participate in the CCRI Tri-State Invitational that begins at 11:00 a.m.
