BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Jake MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) captured top individual honors to lead host Massachusetts Maritime to the team title of the Tenth Annual Lt. Travis J. Fuller Cross Country Invitational that took place Saturday morning along the banks of the Cape Cod Canal on the Academy’s campus.

 

MacVarish covered the five mile layout in a time of 27:50, as the Buccaneers took the top four individual spots and five of the top six in the race.  Freshmen Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) and Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) followed MacVarish in the runner-up and third place spots, respectively, with times of 28:01 and 28:58, while senior Brenton Andrews (Hubbardston, Mass.) and freshman Ryan McNeal (Canton, Ga.) placed fourth and sixth, respectively, with times of 29:21 and 29:52 for Massachusetts Maritime, which was one point shy of a perfect score with 16 points in capturing the championship for the second time in program history.

 

Emerson sophomore Mike O’Connor (Hanover, Mass.) finished fifth with a time of 29:42 in leading the Lions to the runner-up spot in the team standings with 56 points, as teammate Tim Gersten followed in seventh place with a time of 30:19.  Eastern Nazarene sophomore Gregory Whitney (Henniker, N.H.) finished eighth with a time of 30:33, while Suffolk senior Mohammed Nayibor (Dakar, Senegal) and Newbury sophomore Chris Beaudoin (Bristol, Conn.) rounded out the top 10 individuals with respective times of 30:44 and 31:11.

 

Mount Ida finished third in the team standings with 113 points to edge out both Eastern Nazarene (114) and Suffolk (115) in the competition.  Newbury rounded out the team standings with 120 points for a sixth place finish.

 

Massachusetts Maritime will be idle until Saturday, September 20th when the Buccaneers head to North Dartmouth, Mass. to take part in the UMass Dartmouth Buddy Harris Invitational that begins at 11:15 a.m.
