Slattery Named As Massachusetts Maritime's Head Men's Cross Country Coach

Buzzards Bay, Mass. --  Chris Slattery, who has served for the past two years as an assistant men’s cross country coach at Massachusetts Maritime, has been promoted to the position of Head Men’s Cross Country Coach at the Academy.  Slattery’s appointment, which is effective immediately, was announced earlier today by Trish O’Brien, Massachusetts Maritime’s Assistant Director of Athletics.

A resident of Plymouth, Mass., Slattery takes over for longtime Buccaneer mentor Chris Ryan, who retired from the position after 18 seasons earlier this month.  Ryan led Massachusetts Maritime to the 2005 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and was tabbed as the league’s Coach of the Year on three occasions, including this past fall.

“Coach Slattery has played a large role in the continued growth, development and success of our program during his tenure as assistant coach, and I couldn’t be more pleased for him and our student-athletes,” O’Brien said of Slattery’s appointment.  “He will certainly have some big shoes to fill, as all of us in the Buccaneer athletic family owe an incredibly large debt of gratitude to Coach Ryan for his years of service and tireless dedication to our department and our cadets.”

Slattery serves in the full-time role of Chief of Massachusetts Maritime’s Department of Public Safety.  A two-sport standout at Suffolk University, he comes from a family of cross country coaches, as his wife, Meg, served as Ryan’s assistant prior to taking her current role as head cross country coach at Plymouth South High School.

“I’m very honored for the opportunity to be able to coach outstanding young men in this great program, and I want to thank Coach (Director of Athletics) (Bob) Corradi, Trish O’Brien, (Vice President for Student Affairs) Captain (Ed) Rozak and everyone in the athletics department for their support and guidance,” Slattery said of his new position.  “And I especially want to thank Coach Ryan for giving me the chance to be a part of the successful program that he built over nearly 20 years—I look forward to continuing his tradition of success.”

Slattery’s squad will begin the 2015 season on Saturday, September 5th when Massachusetts Maritime hosts the 11th Annual Travis Fuller Invitational on campus beginning at 10:30 a.m. EDT.
