Bucs and Beacons Battle Until Final Whistle in LEC Showdown

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Maritime met with UMass Boston on Saturday in LEC play and in another instant classic between the two squads, the game came down to the final play. Daniel Kane scored four times and had two assists in the Bucs down-to-the-wire 12-11 loss to the Beacons.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Daniel Kane led all players in the game with four goals. Cooper Barrett added three scores, Joe Vricella scored twice, and Quinn Mucha and Braeden Kosiewicz both had one goal.
  • Jack Iversen and Kane both tallied two assists in the loss. Mucha, goalkeeper Ronan Kearney, Kosiewicz, and Vricella all recorded one helper.
  • Faceoff man Andy Aguado-Scheyer and Jack O'Donnell led the Bucs in ground balls with five. 
  • Aguado-Scheyer won nine-of-24 faceoffs he took in the game.
  • Defensively, the Buccaneers caused 17 turnovers as a team, led by Chris Sullivan with five. O'Donnell and James Cassidy each had four.
  • In total, Maritime picked up 31 ground balls, were successful on 28-of-33 clearances, won 9-of-24 faceoffs, failed to score on either of their power play opportunities, and took 36 total shots in the game.

UMass Boston

  • Mic Flynn and Zach Mann both tallied three goals in the win. Sean Daly and Liam Bowler scored twice. Luke Murphy and Greg Wolff each had one goal. 
  • Daly recorded three assists for the Beacs, Flynn had two, and Murphy, Mann, and Wolff all had one.
  • Faceoff man Matt Lucozzi led all players with nine ground balls. He also won 15-of-24 faceoffs in the game. 
  • Defensively, Patrick Carey caused five turnovers and Justin McCullough caused four.
  • In total, UMass Boston picked up 43 ground balls, were successful on 23-of-27 clearances, won 15-of-24 faceoffs, scored four power play goals in nine opportunities, and took 45 total shots in the game.

How It Happened

The Beacons scored first 1:31 into the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, Maritime tied the game on Mucha's goal from Vricella and the teams were tied at 1-1. At the 8:27 mark of the quarter, Kane scored his first and the Buccaneers had a 2-1 lead midway through the first. Boston went on to score two of their own, unanswered, at 4:11 and then at 1:40 and led 3-2. In the final second of the quarter, which would become a theme later in the game, Barret scored for the Bucs and the teams were tied at 3-3 heading to the second quarter.

In the second, after almost seven minutes, Mann scored for UMb and gave them back the lead, 4-3. Mann scored again 27 seconds later on a power play giving his team a two-goal, 5-3, advantage. Keeping the theme of scoring in twos, the Bucs got two unanswered from Barrett and Vricella at 5:25 and 3:34, tying the game at 5-5. With three minutes left in the half, the Beacons scored two, one from Murphy, and Mann scored his third, second on the power play, and UMB led the Bucs at the half, 7-5.

Boston extended their run to three goals to begin the second half, scoring at the 12:28 mark of the quarter to take an 8-5 lead. The Bucs proceeded to grab momentum and score four unanswered, the largest run of the game by either team. Kane scored first, the Vricella and Kosiewicz, and Kane bookended the streak to give the Bucs a 9-8 lead late in the third. Bowler went on to score in the waning second of the quarter, his first of two on the game, and with 15 second left in the quarter, the Beacons tied the game at 9-9. 

In the fourth, Flynn scored first for the Beacs and gave them a 10-9 lead. The teams traded goals the rest of the way as Kane scored for the Bucs at 7:25, tying the game at 10-10. Flynn scored again at 4:58 to retake the lead. Then, later in the quarter, Barret scored for the Buccaneers and the score was tied at 11-11. In the final second of regulation, UMass Boston had an inbounds play. Bowler took a shot from behind the net and the ball glanced into the mesh to give the Beacons the 12-11 win as the clock expired.
