Men's Lacrosse Retains Admiral's Cup with Win over Mariners

CASTINE, Maine -- Men's Lacrosse traveled to Maine Maritime on Saturday for the Annual Admiral's Cup game against the Mariners and with the help of 13 points from Daniel Kane the Bucs left Maine with a 21-11 win over their Maritime rivals.

Inside The Numbers

Mass Maritime

  • Daniel Kane led all players in the game with six goals and led all players with seven assists for a total of 13 points in the game. 
  • Quinn Mucha scored five times with two assists in the win for the Bucs.
  • Cooper Barrett added four scores with Jack Iversen scoring twice and Nick LeanderLiam CogavinCooper McIntire, and Braeden Kosiewicz all scoring once.
  • Iversen, Chris Sullivan, and Seamus Buckley each had an assist in the game.

Maine Maritime

  • Jacob Hintermaier and Sam Nichol each scored three times for the Mariners in the loss. Trey Marcil scored twice for the hosts.
  • Brendan Reddington, Jayden Wilson, and Alex Stevens each scored once.
  • Marcil was credited with three assists in the game, while Nichol tallied two. Riley Morin and Bryce Crowell both had one helper. 
  • On the faceoff, Crowell went 21-for-35 and picked up a game-high 11 ground balls. 
  • Defensively, Hintermaier and Zeb Dufresne each caused two turnovers.
  • In total, Maine picked up 39 ground balls, went 21-for-33 on clearances, won 21-of-36 faceoffs, went 1-for-7 on power plays, and took 35 total shots in the game.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers took a 1-0 lead one minute into the game on Kosiewicz's goal. There was an eight minute lull in the scoring until Leander made it 2-0 Bucs at 5:54 of the first. At 5:18 and then 3:56, the Mariners scored twice to tire the game up at 2-2. Kane broke the tie at 2:51 giving his team a 3-2 advantage. Maine erased the Bucs lead a minute later, tying the game at 3-3. Four second after Reddington's game tying goal, Hintermaier scored to give the Mariners a 4-3 lead that they took to the end of the first quarter. 

In the second, Maritime got two goals from Kane at 11:20 and 10:03 to tie and then take a lead, 5-4. Iversen added another to make it three unanswered for the Buccaneers and give them a two-goal, 6-4. lead halfway through the second. Maine wasted no time getting back within one on Hintermaiers second goal at 8:36. Marcil scored on a power play at 6:18 to tie the game once again, this time at 6-6. The Bucs got the last laugh in the first half with goals from McIntire and another from Kane just 17 seconds apart. The Bucs led the Mariners at the break, 8-6.

To start the third, Barrett netted a goal to make it three unanswered going back to the second and gave the Bucs a 9-6 lead. Nichol scored for Maine and brought it back to two goals, 9-7. At the 6:23 mark of the third, the Buccaneers took full control of the game and scored six more times, unanswered, throughout the remainder of the quarter. Mucha scored first followed by Kane and Barrett and then Mucha closed out the quarter with three more goals to put the Bucs up 15-7 at the end of three quarters of play.

Mass Maritime extended the unanswered streak to 10 goals early in the fourth and extended their lead out to 19-7 with scores from Barrett, Iversen, Mucha, and Kane. Maine came back to score two to break up the party and make the score 19-9. Cogavin scored his lone goal at 4:54 to get the Bucs to 20 goals in the game. Nichol then got the Mariners to double digits with a goal of his own. In the final 16 seconds of the game, each team scored once. Barrett scored for the Bucs and Wilson scored for the Mariners to bring the score to the eventual final, 21-11.

The Buccaneers are back on the road on Tuesday, March 19th to take on Castleton in Vermont in conference play at 4pm.
