Bucs Lose First Conference Game to Owls on Saturday

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Buccaneers men's lax hosted Keene State in conference play on Saturday and after winning each of their first two games in conference this season, they fell to the Owls, 19-9.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Daniel Kane led the Bucs with three goals in the game. Quinn Mucha and Cooper Barrett both had two scores. Nick Leander and Joe Vricella each scored once.
  • Jack Iversen recorded four assists for Maritime. Mucha and Braeden Kosiewicz both had one helper.
  • Brian Rosher led the team with 10 ground balls and won 13-of-31 faceoffs in the loss.
  • Defensively, Evan Doig caused three turnovers in the game.

Keene

  • Andrew Miller and Jeff Wiedenfeld both scored four goals for the Owls. Colby Quiet scored three times, Rex Maccarini and Jack Ansart both scored twice. Four other Owls scored once.
  • Maccarini recorded three assists, Jakob Curtiss and Giacomo Tedone had two helpers and five other Keene players had one assist apiece.
  • Quiet led the Owls in ground balls with nine and won 14-of-21 faceoffs he took. 
  • Defensively, three players recorded two caused turnovers in the win.
  • In total, Keene picked up 36 ground balls, were successful on 21-of-24 clearances, won 18-of-31 faceoffs, scored on six of nine power play opportunities and took 41 total shots in the game.

How It Happened

Keene scored first just over a minute into the game just over a minute in and the Bucs answered on a Barrett goal three minutes later. Keene then went on a three goal run to take a 4-1 lead late in the first. The Bucs broke up the streak on a power play goal from Kane and then Keene scored three more unanswered and led 7-2 at the end of one.

Mucha scored first in the second quarter to pull within four. Keene proceeded to rip off five unanswered goals and took a nine-goal, 12-3, advantage. Maritime scored the last two goals of the half, from Kane and Barrett, and Keene held a 12-5 lead at the half.

The Bucs pulled within five, 12-7, to begin the second half with goals from Vricella and Leander. The teams then traded goals twice throughout the rest of the period and the Bucs outscored the Owls, 4-2, to pull within five goals, 14-9, at the end of three.

The Keene defense kept Maritime off the board in the fourth and their offense scored five times from 13:29 to 6:45 and earned the 19-9 victory over the Buccaneers in conference.

The Buccaneers will host Salem State on Wednesday, April 3rd at Clean Harbors Stadium in conference play with faceoff scheduled for 7pm.
