Bucs Handle Huskies in Conference Play

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Men's lacrosse hosted Southern Maine in conference play on Wednesday at Clean Harbors Stadium in a game that was rescheduled from Saturday, originally intended to be played in Portland, ME. The Bucs came out firing on all cylinders and won the game by a 15 points margin, 24-9, and got a 12-point performance from Quinn Mucha with eight goals and four assists.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Freshman attacker Quinn Mucha recorded a game-high eight goals and for the second consecutive game. 
  • Daniel Kane scored five times and Cooper Barrett added four scores. Jack Iversen netted three goals, Cooper McIntire scored twice, and Patrick Donahue and Joe Vricella each scored once.
  • Iversen provided a game-high six assists. Mucha and Kane each had four helpers. Ryan Cameron added two assists and Barrett and Vricella had one apiece.
  • Faceoff man Brian Rosher picked up a game-high 13 ground balls and won 25-of-34 faceoffs in the win.
  • Defensively, Chris Sullivan recorded four caused turnovers.
  • In total, Maritime picked up 47 ground balls, were successful on 19-of-24 clears, won 26-of-37 faceoffs, scored on one of seven power plays and took 58 total shots.

Southern Maine

  • Reigning LEC Player of the Week, Schuyler Wetmore and Nick James each scored three times. Owen Gaulrapp, Adam Coley, and Patrick O'Driscoll each scored once.
  • Aman Zunser tallied four assists in the loss. Duncan Hayes, and Wetmore each had one.
  • Iyah Lavit picked up a team-high four ground balls for the Huskies. 
  • Defensively, Lavit caused four turnovers in the loss.
  • In total, Southern Maine picked up 37 ground balls, were successful on 17-of-30 clearance attempts, won 11-of-37 faceoffs, scored on two of five power plays, and took 33 total shots in the game.

How It Happened

Kane scored first for the Bucs less than a minute in to give the Bucs an early 1-0 lead. At 11:05 of the first, USM tied the game on a power play goal from Coley. From there, the Buccaneers scored five unanswered to end the first quarter with a 6-1 advantage.

In the second, Mucha scored first at 12:39 to put the Bucs up by six, 7-1. Southern Maine scored just over a minute later to make the score 7-2. The Buccaneers scored two in a row from Mucha and Kane and the Bucs led 9-2 with nine minute to play in the first half. Wetmore added a third goal for the Huskies at 8:04 and the deficit was then six, 9-3. Barrett scored the final goal of the half at 4:00 to put Maritime at double digit goals and give them a 10-3 lead at the halftime break.

USM scored first in the third just under three minutes in from James on a power play. Wetmore made it two in a row for the Huskies at 8:23 and cut the deficit in half as they were down 10-5. Mucha scored again at 6:33 and Gaulrapp matched it just over a minute later and the Bucs led by five, 11-6. Barrett scored back-to-back goals at 4:30 and 3:53, one on a power play, giving the Bucs a 13-6 lead. O'Driscoll scored for the Huskies at 2:55 and Mucha and Iversen netted goals at 2:39 and 1:44. Maritime led Southern Maine at the end of three quarters, 15-7.

In the fourth, it was all Maritime for nearly 13 minutes. The Bus rattled off nine in a row, running their unanswered streak to 11, and were up 24-7. Southern Maine added two more goals in the final 2:10 from James and Wetmore and the Bucs held on for the 24-9 victory to go to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in conference.

The Buccaneers are back home on Saturday to take on Keene State in LEC play beginning at 4pm.
