Hunt Nets Pair Of Goals, Correia Makes Nine Saves As Women's Lacrosse Drops MASCAC Decision At Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. --  Junior Meg Griffin (Granby, Conn.) netted five goals and an assist for six points to lead Westfield State to a 16-2 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Friday evening at Alumni Field.

 

Griffin sparked a five-goal run over the final 11:40 of the opening half that enabled the host Owls (7-4, 3-0 MASCAC) to turn a one-goal lead into a 7-1 advantage at the break, and Westfield State took control of the match with six unanswered markers (including two more from Griffin) in the opening 7:22 after intermission in grabbing a 13-1 edge.  Junior Blair Smith (Milford, Mass.) added a hat trick as well for the winners, who also received a pair of goals and an assist from junior Samantha Lungarini (Agawam, Mass.) as well as two tallies off the stick of freshman Samantha Coyle (Weymouth, Mass.). 

 

Senior Stephanie Lenhardt (Duxbury, Mass.) chipped in with a marker and three helpers to finish with four points on the night for the Owls, who also received a goal and assist from sophomore Caroline Smart (Weymouth, Mass.) to go with single tallies by junior Roni Orcutt (Granville, Mass.) and freshman Madison Devine (Walpole, Mass.).  Freshman Brooke Williams (Wilbraham, Mass.) joined Lenhardt with three assists for Westfield State, which also received a helper from freshman Stephanie Godek (West Springfield, Mass.).

 

Freshman Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.) netted both goals in the setback for the visiting Buccaneers (4-4, 1-2 MASCAC), as junior Mimi Khampaeng (Hampden, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with a pair of saves over the first 41-plus minutes in net for Westfield State, which also received two stops from sophomore Alanah Melanson (Chelmsford, Mass.).  Freshman Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) made nine saves in 40-plus minutes of action in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as the Owls outshot the Buccaneers by a 30-7 margin while holding a 16-4 edge in draw controls for the contest.

 

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Salem State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing on Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:30 p.m., while Westfield State heads to Bridgewater, Mass. on Tuesday evening for a MASCAC match with Bridgewater State that begins at 7:00 p.m.
