Smith Forces Overtime With Late Hat Trick As Women's Lacrosse Drops 12-10 Extra Session Decision At Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass. -- Senior Jessica Houghton (Billerica, Mass.) and sophomore Molly Dufresne (Plaistow, N.H.) each netted goals in overtime to lift Wentworth to a 12-10 non-league college women’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Monday evening at Sweeney Field.
The host Leopards (4-8) snapped an early 3-3 tie by scoring the final three goals of the half to take a 6-3 advantage at the break, and Wentworth built its lead to four on a pair of occasions, the last on Houghton’s marker with 12:55 remaining in regulation, in taking a 9-5 edge. The visiting Buccaneers (5-7) stormed back with four unanswered tallies over a 5:18 stretch, including a pair off the stick of junior Molly Smith (Westwood, Mass.), to even matters at 9-9 with 5:52 to play, but the hosts regained a one-goal lead on senior Alexandrea Banks’s (Ellington, Conn.) marker just 1:03 later. Smith enabled Massachusetts Maritime to force the extra session by completing her hat trick with 38 seconds remaining, but Houghton scored what proved to be the golden goal for the Leopards 53 seconds into the overtime period, as Dufresne tacked on an insurance tally with 2:33 remaining to account for the final score.
Houghton finished with five goals and an assist for six points in the win for Wentworth, while Dufresne tallied twice and added a helper to finish with three points. Junior Pam Mudge (Hooksett, N.H.) added a pair of markers in the triumph for the Leopards, who also received a goal and assist each from Banks and sophomore Brandie Holland (Lynn, Mass.). Sophomore Amanda Dexter (Harvard, Mass.) chipped in with goal as well for the winners, who received a pair of assists from sophomore Sage Vadenais (Fiskdale, Mass.) to go with a helper off the stick of freshman Alissa Cirio (Valhalla, N.Y.).
Smith added an assist to go with her hat trick in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received hat tricks and two assists each from sophomore Ashley Solari (Sandwich, Mass.) and freshman Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.). Sophomore Christina Murphy (Forestdale, Mass.) added a marker and two helpers on the night for the Buccaneers, who suffered their second straight overtime setback with the decision.
Senior Robyn Pacini (Stoneham, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Wentworth with a 14-save effort, while freshman Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) made nine stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Buccaneers outshot the Leopards by a 30-27 margin for the contest.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Worcester State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference match on Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Wentworth entertains Western New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference clash on Wednesday evening at Sweeney Field that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
