FINAL:                        MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 16, MAINE MARITIME 6

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. --  Junior Molly Smith (Westwood, Mass.) and sophomore Ashley Solari (Sandwich, Mass.) each netted four goals to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a season-opening 16-6 college women’s lacrosse victory over Maine Maritime in first round play of the First Annual Maritime Cup played Saturday morning at SUNY-Maritime’s Reinhart Field.

Solari tallied twice over the final 19:56 of the opening half as the Buccaneers (1-0) broke an early 1-1 tie by scoring six of the final eight goals before intermission to take a 7-3 advantage at the break, and a Smith marker sandwiched a pair of goals off the stick of freshman Brianna Pingree (Mashpee, Mass.) in a 1:35 span early in the second half to key a four-goal run that gave Massachusetts Maritime an 11-3 edge with just over 24 minutes remaining.  The Mariners (0-3) closed back to within five on tallies off the sticks of senior Taylor O’Malley (Middletown, R.I.) and sophomore Briana Obshatkin (Dedham, Mass.) midway through the final period, but a pair of goals from Smith, coupled with markers from Solari and fellow sophomore Dahlia Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.), over a 7:41 stretch iced the Buccaneer triumph.

Smith added an assist to finish with five points in the win for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a hat trick and a helper from Pingree as well as a pair of tallies from sophomore Christina Murphy (Forestdale, Mass.).  Junior Janine Prokscha (Washington, Conn.) and freshman Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.) joined Seggelin in collecting a goal and an assist for the Buccaneers, who captured the inaugural Admiral’s Cup between the two Maritime rivals in the process.

Obshatkin and junior Rachael Redles (Coopersburg, Pa.) notched a goal and an assist each in the setback for Maine Maritime, which also received single tallies off the sticks of senior Ally Fuehrer (Freeport, Maine), junior Patricia Dunford (Walkersville, Md.) and sophomore Tori Cooper (Saco, Maine).  Senior Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Massachusetts Maritime with a five save effort in the opening 30 minutes of play, while freshman Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) made three second half stops for the Buccaneers.  Sophomore Ashlee Knight (Anson, Maine) made 11 saves in the setback for the Mariners, as Massachusetts Maritime outshot Maine Maritime by a 31-17 margin (27-14 on goal) and forced 31 turnovers in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Massachusetts Maritime will meet SUNY-Maritime for the championship of the First Annual Maritime Cup on Sunday morning at Reinhart Field beginning at 11:00 a.m., as the host Privateers notched a 16-6 triumph over Maine Maritime in their opening round match on Friday afternoon.  The Mariners will be idle until next Saturday afternoon when Maine Maritime hosts Colby-Sawyer in its North Atlantic Conference opener at Ritchie Field in Castine, Maine beginning at 1:00 p.m.
