O'Donnell Takes Top Honors In Triple Jump As Outdoor Track & Field Enjoys One Of Best Days In School History At UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track and field team enjoyed one of the best days in program history on Saturday afternoon at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic, as the Buccaneer men placed fourth overall and the women 11th in competition involving 13 total teams.

Junior Rory O’Donnell (Somerset, Mass.) led the way on the men’s side by taking top honors in the triple jump with a mark of 13.15 meters, as he also finished third in the high jump (1.78 meters) and added a fifth place performance in the long jump (5.73 meters).  Sophomore Chris Sullo (Canton, Mass.) added a second place effort in the high jump (1.83 meters) while finishing fifth in the triple jump (12.23 meters), while fellow sophomore Chris Dintino (Mashpee, Mass.) added a third place finish in the hammer throw (35.45 meters) and a fourth place performance in the shot put (11.63 meters) for the Buccaneers, which also received a fourth place finish in the javelin (45.90 meters) from sophomore James Hutchinson (Pembroke, Mass.).

Freshman Rob Bergonzi (Quincy, Mass.) posted a third place finish in the 3,000 steeplechase for Massachusetts Maritime on the day with a time of 12:45.17, while fellow freshman Gabriel Bermudez (Guaynabo, P.R.) was fifth in the javelin with a mark of 44.88 meters.  Freshman Evan Balderelli (Brimfield, Mass.) placed sixth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.01, while the tandem of juniors Brian Reske (Duxbury, Mass.), Phil Astone (East Falmouth, Mass.) and Ryan Buchanio (Plainville, Mass.) recorded seventh place performances in the 1,500 meters (4:21.09), javelin (43.60 meters) and discus (33.90 meters), respectively.

The Buccaneers posted a team score of 82 points on the day, as host UMass Dartmouth (208 points) took top honors, with Worcester State and Bridgewater State following in second and third place, respectively.

Junior Meredith Hall (Duxbury, Mass.) continued her impressive season on the women’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as she placed fourth in the javelin with a mark of 32.86 meters.

The Buccaneers return to action next Saturday morning by heading to New London, Conn. to participate in the Connecticut College Silfen Invitational that begins at 11:00 a.m.
