O'Donnell, Sullo Pace Solid Effort With First Place Performances For Outdoor Track & Field Squad At Connecticut College Silfen Invitational

NEW LONDON, Conn. --  The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field team tuned up for next weekend’s MASCAC Championships with solid performances on both sides at the Connecticut College Silfen Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Rory O’Donnell (Somerset, Mass.) and sophomore Chris Sullo (Canton, Mass.) led the way on the men’s side for the Buccaneers, as O’Donnell took top honors in the triple jump with a mark of 13.54 meters and Sullo captured first place in the high jump with a mark of 1.91 meters.  O’Donnell was fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.76 meters, while Sullo added a fifth place finish in the triple jump at 12.70 meters.

Sophomore James Hutchinson (Pembroke, Mass.) led a quartet of Buccaneers that recorded top 10 finishes in the javelin, as he finished second in the event with a mark of 46.34 meters.  Junior Phil Astone (East Falmouth, Mass.) was fifth with a mark of 42.93 meters, while the sophomore tandem of Craig Griffith (Bourne, Mass.) and Bill Sharp (Miami, Fla.) placed ninth and 10th, respectively, with marks of 40.22 and 39.78 meters.

Sophomore Kevin Quinn (Barrington, R.I.) added an eighth place effort in the hammer throw with a mark of 37.00 meters for Massachusetts Maritime, which placed seventh overall in the men’s competition won by Coast Guard.

Freshman Laura Spalt (Harwichport, Mass.) led the way on the women’s side for the Buccaneers, as she placed third in the high jump with a mark of 1.30 meters, while junior Meredith Hall (Duxbury, Mass.) posted a fifth place performance in the javelin with a mark of 31.02 meters.  Massachusetts Maritime placed 11th in the women’s team competition, as Worcester State took top honors on the day.

The Buccaneers travel to North Dartmouth, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete in the 2010 MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships hosted by UMass Dartmouth that begin at 11:00 a.m.
