Dinghy Sailing Records Pair Of Top 11 Finishes In Season Openers At Maine Maritime, Roger Williams

CASTINE, Maine/BRISTOL, R.I. -- The Massachusetts Maritime dinghy sailing team began its fall schedule by posting a pair of top 11 performances in competition over the weekend at the Maine Maritime Penobscot Bay Open and the Roger Williams Mount Hope Bay Invitational.
Sophomore Frank Reeg (Spring Lake, Mich.) and Catherine Haines (East Haddam, Conn.) comprised the Buccaneer “A” entry at Maine Maritime, while seniors Kyle Brego (St. John, Virgin Islands) and Emily Casella (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) sailed in the “B” boat. Both squads were faced with challenging conditions throughout the weekend, as a lack of wind on Saturday and Sunday morning gave way to a strong weather front accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. Massachusetts Maritime finished 10th overall among the 13 entrants in the event, with Rhode Island taking the top spot and Boston College claiming the runner-up position.
Difficult and changing conditions greeted the Buccaneers at Roger Williams, as the junior tandem of Jeffrey Adam (Newport, R.I.) and Sergio Gratta (Sarasota, Fla.) sailed in the Buccaneer “A” boat while the brother combination of sophomore Evan Bowen and freshman Alex Bowen (North Kingstown, R.I.) comprised the “B” entry. Massachusetts Maritime placed 11th of 19 teams competing in the event, as the host Hawks took top honors in the final standings over runner-up Tufts.
The Buccaneers will head to Burlington, Vt. this weekend to compete at the Vermont Ross Trophy on Lake Champlain beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
