Teehan Is MASCAC Rookie, Four Named All-Conference

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Buccaneer Baseball capped off an exciting 2018 season with a series of awards from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, headlined by Rookie of the Year John Teehan. Teehan was joined on the All-Conference First Team by Logan Sullo, while Connor Kennedy and Casey Furnas were tabbed to the MASCAC Second Team.

Teehan put together an exceptional first year on the mound and had already earned awards for Pitcher of the Week, Rookie of the Week, plus two appearances on the Honor Roll. The right-hander appeared in 13 games, serving as both a conference starter and closer. On the season, Teehan was 4-3 with three saves and a 2.79 ERA, with the latter two numbers third in the conference.

The Hyde Park, Mass. native struck out 64 in 58 innings, or 9.93 per nine innings, sixth in the MASCAC. Amazingly, despite tying for fifth in the conference in complete games with four, Teehan also was third in saves, coming in to close out three games.

From March 30 onward, Teehan had a 1.56 ERA and struck out 47 in 40 1/3 frames. He finished the season with an exclamation point, tossing an extra-inning complete game on April 28 against Worcester in the season finale that clinched a share of first place for the Buccaneers. On May 4, Teehan was on the bump for the first game of the post-season and responded like a veteran, whiffing 11 and giving up only four hits in seven innings.

Teehan earned a spot on the All-MASCAC First Team aside battery-mate Logan Sullo. The backstop concluded his record-setting career with a dominant 2018 campaign, for which he was twice listed on the conference Honor Roll. It was the third All-Conference nod for Sullo, who took home back-to-back Player of the Year honors in his first two season, adding Rookie of the Year in 2015, the last time the Bucs took that award.

Sullo did not disappoint in his senior season, despite receiving more than a few hittable pitches per game. Despite walking a whopping 24 times, tied for third in the league, Sullo still blasted seven home runs, the second-most in the MASCAC. His penultimate home run set the all-time career mark and Sullo finished with 17.

The Acushnet, Mass. resident put up a conference-leading .491 on-base percentage and a .679 slugging average that was second-best. To this, he added a .321 batting mark and only 10 strikeouts in 109 plate appearances. Sullo will graduate with a .374/.499/.649 slash line that includes 22 doubles, 13 triples, and a 68-to-40 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Sullo was no slouch behind the dish either, throwing out 23.5 percent of running attempting to steal and accruing a fielding percentage of .995. During his four years, he mowed down 24.1 percent of would-be base thieves.

Kennedy earned All-Conference honors for the third straight season as he featured on both the 2016 and 2017 First Teams. The rightfielder continued his strong hitting with a .316/.368/.447 mark and showed his usual excellent plate discipline, walking 10 times and striking out only 14. Kennedy 'retires' with a .341 average, which is No. 22 all-time. After hitting three dingers in his first three years, Kennedy even popped two home runs in the season's final weeks.

Furnas was the third senior to be tabbed for the list, concluding his career with, by far, his finest season. The shortstop was honored after hitting .314/.397/.353 and showing off his strong arm in the field. Furnas was named MASCAC Player of the Week on April 9 after going 7-for-10 in three games the previous week. The Boca Raton, Fla. player finishes with a .292 career average.

Anthony Crowley and John Gegetskas earned Player and Pitcher of the Year awards from the conference. Owls. Crowley finished at the top of the conference in several categories, including home runs (12), RBI (55), and slugging percentage (.752).

Gegetskas led the league in wins with eight and strikeouts at 82. He had the second-best ERA at 2.00 and complete games with five. The hurler dominated Maritime in an April 21 start, striking out 11 in six two-hit, shutout innings. He averaged 10.91 strikeouts per game, while holding his opponents to a .199 batting average.

The Academy will host the NCAA Division III New England Regional at Whitehouse Field in Harwich beginning on May 17. Fans of Buccaneer baseball will want to check out the region's finest baseball talent, with teams announced on the night of Mother's Day.
