Smith’s Ks Fall Short in Fisher Loss

LYNN, Mass. – Massachusetts Maritime Academy's five-game winning state came to a screeching halt at Fisher College as the Buccaneers lost 14-0 in a non-conference matchup. Matt Smith continued to pile up the strikeouts, but the Falcons' Zach LeBlanc tossed seven shutout innings as the Bucs dropped to 11-8.

The hosts got off to a great start with a two-run first, adding pairs of runs in the second, fourth, and fifth innings against Smith, who continued to pound the strike zone. A four-run seventh combined with the pitching of LeBlanc put the game out of reach, and another two markers in the eighth made it 14.

Maritime put only four runners in scoring position the whole game, not once with fewer than two outs. Paul Sances had two of the visitors' four hits, with Connor Kennedy stroking a double and Nathan Anderson a single. Marley Dembitzki walked twice, but that was all the offense mustered against the Falcons.

LeBlanc improved to 7-3 with a 2.54 ERA, striking out nine and working around four hits and two free passes. Norberto Castellanos and Zac White each tossed a scoreless frame. Fisher used 21 players in the game, with Ángel Pérez Vargas leading the way with a 3-for-5, three RBI day. Fisher is now 18-12 on the season.

Smith (1-4) took the loss despite striking out eight in five innings as he surrendered eight runs on nine hits and two walks. The sophomore ranks third in the conference in strikeouts at 44. Three other relievers finished the game, with only Brian Kwedor emerging unscathed in 1 1/3 innings.

The Blue-and-Gold will regroup before hosting Suffolk University (8-13) on Thursday at Hendy Field, with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Bucs will continue MASCAC play as they host MCLA (8-7-1, 1-2-1) in a bid to maintain their grip on first place in the conference (4-0). All are welcome and admission is free.
