Bucs Place 79 on All-Academic, Five for Fourth Time

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Association announced its Spring All-Academic Team, and a whopping 79 Buccaneer athletes were listed. In total, cadets from eight sports were honored, with at least four men and four women in each. Men's lacrosse claimed the most honorees, as 17 players were tabbed for the list.

Student-athletes that compete in championship varsity sports offered by each of the MASCAC institutions during the course of the spring 2018 athletic season and have achieved a 3.20 cumulative or semester-based grade point average during the semester are eligible for selection to the Spring All-Academic Team.

The Academy's selections featured 14 seniors and 10 in their third year, while 17 sophomores and 38 youngies saw their named listed. Only five Bucs took home the award for a fourth consecutive time, as recent graduates Nathan Anderson, Mikayla Correia, Casey Furnas, Samuel Hastings, and Justin Nichols were each selected to the MASCAC Academic squad in all four spring seasons in the time at MMA. All but Correia (women's lacrosse) and Hastings (men's lacrosse) suited up for Athletic Director Mike Kelley's baseball team.

A trio of third-year sailors took home All-Academic awards for the third consecutive year. Braden Foster, Evan Bowen, and Matthew Schaefer were the only Buccaneers in any sport to put themselves on pace for a MASCAC Academic prize in all four seasons.

Three other seniors earned their third nod in four years: baseball's Gerald Gerbis, Brianna Caissie from crew, and women's laxer Stephanie Hunt. Hunt joined Furnas and softball's Jill Corazzini as the only Bucs to earn a spot on both the All-Academic and an All-Conference team.

"We are so proud of all our student-athletes who've been recognized and earned spots on the All-Academic team," enthused Kelley. "They've made it a priority to excel on the field and in the classroom, which is exactly what we want out of every Buccaneer."

Alphabetically by sport, there were 11 baseball players, seven from men's crew, four female rowers, 17 from men's lacrosse, seven women's laxers, 12 sailors, seven softballers, and 14 track and field athletes. The full list is appended below.

Westfield State University placed the most student-athletes on the Spring 2018 MASCAC All-Academic Team with 150 total, while Worcester State University and Bridgewater State University were close in second and third with 126 and 125, respectively, Salem State University is fourth with 86 while Fitchburg State University is fifth with 81 student-athletes on the team. "MASCAC student-athletes' achievements in the classroom are the cornerstone of the conference and Division III philosophy," said Commissioner Baumann. "It brings me great pride to see the academic success of our student-athletes along with their athletic achievements and giving back to their communities.
