Teehan, Furnas Sweep MASCAC Awards

John Teehan and Casey Furnas helped Massachusetts Maritime Academy baseball to a perfect 3-0 last week and today were rewarded with MASCAC Weekly Honors. Teehan took home Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week, while Furnas was the Player of the Week selection.

Teehan pitched a complete game shutout against MASCAC foe Salem State on Saturday, sending down a whopping nine on strikes. The right-hander allowed only four runners into scoring position and induced seven groundball outs to prevent runners from advancing.

Last week, the first-year righty saved both ends of a conference doubleheader at Fitzburg State and has yet to be scored on in conference games. Teehan has struck out 12 in 9 1/3 innings in those contests. On the season, the Hyde Park, Mass. native has struck out 29 in 27 frames with a 3.67 ERA, serving as starter, stopper, and everything in between.

Furnas was a one-man wrecking crew against Salem St. in MASCAC action this week, going 5-for-7 and scoring two runs after notching a nifty 2-for-3 effort against Wentworth as MMA swept its three games this week. Furnas' best game was a 4-for-5 effort against the Vikings in which he scored twice, doubled, and drove in one. The shortstop also contributed on the defensive side, showing off a cannon arm on two tough plays against the Leopards and playing flawless baseball in seven chances.

Furnas is having, by far, his best year. More known for his rifle arm at shortstop, Furnas is off to the best start of his career at the plate. Through 13 games, he is hitting .356, raising his career mark to .297, and has not committed an error in his last seven games.

This week, the Bucs, who are in first place in the MASCAC, travel to Fisher College (17-12) on Tuesday for a single game before hosting Suffolk University (8-13) on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The week concludes with the 11-7 baseballers hosting conference opponents MCLA (8-7-1, 1-2-1) for a Saturday twinbill at 1 p.m. All are welcome to Hendy Field for the homestand and admission is free.
