LONGMEADOW, Mass. – Led by Logan Sullo, the Buccaneer bats came alive and freshman southpaw Mason Ashburn pitched superbly in the nightcap as Mass Maritime took two from Clark University. The 11-9 and 7-3 wins improved MMA's record to 5-6 as the weather has finally improved enough for the season to continue.

In the opener, the Bucs scored six in the first, allowing Clark three in return, before adding another three of their own in the second. Sullo got Maritime going quickly as the third batter of the game launched a two-run homer for the opening runs. A Nathan Anderson two-run double wrapped up the six-run frame. Kevin Troy ripped a two-run two-bagger of his own in the second and MMA held off a late rally in the victory.

John Teehan (1-1) was credit with the victory despite lasting only four innings. The first-year righty struck out three, but allowed five runs on five hits and five walks. Wyatt Major and Colin Thoener finished off the game, with the latter earning his first save after striking out three in 1 2/3 innings. Conor Walsh (2-2) took the loss for the Cougars, allowing seven earned runs in one innings. Joshua Dobratz tossed 5 2/3 relief innings, while Daniel Davidoff got the last out.

The rubber match saw Clark score two runs off Ashburn, who was making the third start of his university career. From that point on it was all Maritime, which scored three in the third, with Anderson and Connor Kennedy stroking RBI-singles.

The visitors, originally scheduled to host the Cougars at Hendy Field, added another two in the fourth on Kennedy and Casey Furnas safeties. In the seventh, Sullo put the game out of reach with another two-run roundtripper, giving him four for the season.

That was all Ashburn needed, as the first-year East Freetown native cruised to the complete game three-hitter. Ashburn allowed only an unearned run after the first, sending down six on strikes and walking six, lowering his season ERA to 3.00 in 15 innings. Ashburn has struck out 17 in that time. Callum Sawden (0-1) took the loss for Clark after surrendering three runs in two inning and, while Clark reliever Sean Savage allowed four runs in five relief frames, he did strike out seven without issuing a free pass.

Sullo was 3-for-7 with two walks in the doubleheader, while Furnas put up matching 2-for-4 efforts in each, replicating his performance in last week's loss to WPI. Kennedy had three hits in the second game, while Jackson Simone matched him in the opener.

"The bats came to life today and we had two good wins against a very good team," pronounced Head Coach Mike Kelley. "Mason Ashburn was tremendous on the mound in game two, keeping Clark off balance all afternoon."

Clark dropped to 8-5 with the losses, while MMA will play four games this week, including back-to-back home contests on Tuesday and Wednesday. The former is against Becker (4-10) at 4 p.m., while Tufts (5-4) comes to town on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Admission to Hendy Field is free for what will be the de facto Opening Week.
