Softball Loses Two Close Conference Games to Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass -- The Buccaneer softball team took on Fitchburg State in a conference doubleheader Tuesday that was rescheduled from this past Saturday. The Buccaneers led early in game one and late in game two but the Falcons prevailed with a 3-1 win in game one and a 5-4 extra inning win in game two.

 

Game One

The Basics

  • Reagan KereczKelsey Booker, and Sarah Holler each had a double in the game to round out the Buccaneers hits in the loss.
  • Holler drove in the only run.
  • Kerecz scored the only run in the game.

Fitchburg

  • Julia Gauvin had three hits for the Falcons. Dana Cisowski added two hits. Molly Grass and Jessica Mueller each had one hit.
  • Mueller drove in two runs, Cisowski drove in one.
  • Grass, Gauvin, and Cisowski each scored one run.
  • Gauvin and Cisowski each had a double in the win.

How It Happened

Maritime took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Kerecz led off the game with a double and later in the inning, Holler drove her in to give the Bucs the lead. In the bottom of the inning, Mueller singled to right center and Gauvin and Cisowski came in to score giving the Falcons the 2-1 lead, a lead they would not surrender.

In the bottom of the third, Cisowski singled and scored Grass to make the score 3-1.

Cahill and Klemp battled in the circle down the stretch and unable to get their offense rolling, the Bucs fell in game one, 3-1.

  • Four different players had two hits each for the Falcons. Five players had one hit each.
  • Jessica Mueller drove in three runs. Dana Cisowski and Ella Marshall drove in one run each.
  • Cisowski scored twice, Molly Grass, Adria McKenzie, and Allison Pogorek all scored once.
  • Cisowski had a triple and a double in the game. Grass also had a double. 
  • Pogorek recorded the only stolen base of the day.

How It Happened

In the bottom of the first inning, Mueller singled to bring in Cisowski giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead after one. 

In the top of the third, Booker doubled to right field and scored Burton. Immediately after, Holler hit a single to right center and Booker came in to score from second. The Bucs held a 2-1 lead through two and a half. Fitchburg tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the third on a Mueller sacrifice fly that scored Cisowski for the second time in the game. 

Maritime answered in the top of the fourth and retook the lead. Kerecz singled to right center and Ward came in to score. Next up was Burton and she singled through the middle of the infield and brought in Coffren to give the Buccaneers a 4-2 lead. In the home half of the fourth, Cisowski grounded out to second and Pogorek scored from third to get the Falcons within one run, 4-3, after four.

Fitchburg tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Marshall singled through the right side and scored McKenzie. The teams were tied, 4-4, after five innings.

The sixth and seventh went scoreless and the teams headed to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, the Buccaneers were retired without scoring a run. In the bottom half of the frame, Mueller singled to right and brought in Grass to score the winning run, earning the Falcons the 5-4 win and sweep of the Buccaneers.

 

What's Next

The Bucs are back home on Saturday, April 13th to take on MCLA in conference play beginning at 1pm. It will also be senior day for lone senior Carleen Harring
