Softball Sweeps Pilgrims to Remain Undefeated

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Softball hosted New England College on thursday afternoon. Over the two games, the Buccaneers swpt the Pilgrims with a close 5-4 final in game one and an 8-2 win going away in game two. 

 

Game One

  • Sonia Garcia had three hits in the game for the Pilgrims.
  • Emily Gagne was the only other Grims hitter to have a multi-hit game.
  • Grace Geisler, Emma Lopez, Abigail Grimes, Carlie Panas, and Bella Kieran each had one hit.
  • Garcia drove in two runs and Panas brought in one.
  • Geisler's lone hit was a triple, the only extra base hit of the game for the Pilgrims.
  • Ashleigh Lemay, Grimes, Arianna Bayze, and Hendricks al lscored a run in the loss.
  • Lauren Hendricks stole two bases in the game and Lopez stole one. 

How It Happened

The Buccaneers controlled the game through the first four innings of the game jumping out to a 5-0 lead. They scored two runs in the bottom of the first when Holler grounded out to second and Burton came in to score. The Bucs led 1-0 after one.

In the third, Maritime scored twice on Patane's home run scoring her and Sprague. The Bucs led 3-0 after three.

In the bottom of the fourth, Booker hit a sacrifice fly to center field bringing in Donlan to score. Later in the inning, Kerecz came in to score on a wild pitch and the Bucs led 5-0.

NEC kept the Bucs off the board the rest of the way and started a comeback attempt. In the sixth, three runs came across for the Grims and they cut the Buccaneers lead to 5-3. 

With Catlett in the circle in relief of Klemp, the Pilgrims scored one run in the top of the seventh and Maritime held their guests off for the remainder of the inning to earn their third win of the season, 5-4, over New England College.

  • Sonia Garcia led the Pilgrims in hits in game two with two. Surena Montero, Grace Geisler, Bella Keiran, and Lauren Hendricks all had one hit. 
  • Montero and Hendricks each drove in one run.
  • Kieran scored both runs in the gam for NEC.
  • Hendricks hit a double, the only extra base hit in the game for the Grims. 
  • Hendricks stole two bases, Gagne was credited with one stolen base.

How It Happened

The Pilgrims took their first and only lead of the day in the top of the second inning, 1-0, on Hendricks' double to right to score Kieran. In the bottom of the first, Holler singled back to the pitcher and Patane scored from third to tie the game at 1-1. 

After scoreless innings in the third and fourth, The Buccaneers took the lead for good in the fifth. Booker doubled to bring in Sprague to break the tie and take a 2-1 lead. Then, Patane reached on an error that scored Rolfe. On the same play, the Pilgrims threw to third to cut down Patane and on a second error on the play Dee came in to score to make the score 4-1 Buccaneers.

In the top of the sixth, NEC scored their second run on a pinch hit single my Montero that scored Kieran and the Bucs lead was cut to two runs, 4-2. In the home half of the frame, the Bucs added some insurance scoring four runs. Kerecz singled to right center scoring Haller. Then on a double steal, Donlan scored on a throwing error to make it 6-2. Booker kept the scoring going singling to center field to bring in Kerecz, and Patane brought in booker on a triple to make the score 8-2. 

With Klemp in in relief, the Buccaneers shut down the Pilgrims in the seventh to earn the 8-2 win and the second win of the day.

 

What's Next

The Bucs will host Rivier University on Saturday at Rollins field for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 12pm.
