Bucs Split with Riv in Saturday Doubleheader

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Softball hosted Rivier University on Saturday afternoon and in a heated battle between the two teams over the two games the teams split the day with Riv winning game one, 8-4, and the Bucs handling game two, 12-4. 

 

Game One

Rivier

  • Kylee Caetano was the only Riv player two record a multi-hit game. 
  • Seven other Raiders tallied a hit in the win.
  • Caetano drove in four runs in the game, all on her grand slam home run. Three other Raiders were credited with RBIs.
  • Haleigh Silva, Caetano, and Amanda Atkinson each scored two runs. Kayla Miles and Christina Louh scored once.
  • To go along with Caetano's home run, Miles and Avry Nelson each had a double.
  • Hayley Rapaglia stole the only base for the guests.

How It Happened

Rivier scored first in the top of the first with two runs coming across. Olivia Couto singled up the middle and Silva scored to make it 1-0 Rivier. Rapaglia later reached on a fielder's choice and Caetano scored to make it 2-0 Raiders after one. 

Neither team scored in the second or third and in the fourth the Raiders scored four on Caetano's two-out grand slam over the center field fence. Down 6-0, Maritime answered in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. Donlan singled to bring in Sprague and Holler and Burton reached on an error that allowed Donlan to score to cut the Raiders lead in half, 6-3, after four innings.

In the top of the fifth, Riv added another run when Nelson doubled to score miles. They added another in the top of the sixth on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Rivier led the Bucs 8-3 after six.

In the bottom of the seventh, Catlett singled to score Rolfe and that was all the Bucs coule bring across in their final inning. The Raiders took game one by an 8-4 final.

Maritime

  • In the circle, Catlett pitched 4.2 no-hit innings before allowing an infield hit.
  • Ab'c'de Patane went 3-for-3 at the plate. Reagan Kerecz and Sarah Holler each had two hits in the win.
  • Hannah BurtonKelsey BookerJennamarie Klemp, and Rubi Butler all had one hit each.
  • Patane and Holler both drove in four runs. Booker plated two, and Burton and Ryleigh Ward each brought in one run.
  • Booker, Patane, and Holler all hit home runs in the game. It was Patane's third of the season and Holler's first-career long ball.
  • Kerecz added an extra base hit with a triple.
  • Ava Rolfe stole the only bag for the Bucs.

Rivier

  • Five different players had one hit each for the Raiders.
  • Kyleigh Burtsell drove in three runs. Kylee Caetano drove in two.
  • Five different players scored the runs for Riv.
  • Burtsell and Christina Panagiotopolous both had doubles, the only extra base hits for the Raiders in the game.
  • Hayleigh Silva stole a bag for the guests.

How It Happened

Maritime jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a Booker solo home run and a two-run shot from Holler off the left center field fence. 

The Bucs held the 3-0 lead until the top of the fifth inning with no runs scored between the second and fourth. In the top of the fifth, Burtsell tied the game for Rivier with a two-out, bases-loaded, bases-clearing double to right center to run the score to 3-3. In the bottom of the frame, Maritime retook the lead scoring six runs. Booker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the first run. Patane drove in two runs on a single to right field. Holler singled to left bringing in two more runs, and Ward hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Holler. The Bucs led the Raiders, 9-3, after five.

Rivier scored two runs in the top of the sixth on a Caetano infield single. The speed of the Raiders allowed Louh and Atkinson to score to make it a four-run game, 9-5 Bucs. In the bottom of the sixth, Burton singled to score Kerecz and Patane hit her third home run of the season to score herself and Olivia Coffren to make the score 12-5.

Klemp shut the door on the Raiders in the top of the seventh and earned the game two win, 12-5, and a split of the day with the Raiders.

Maritime is back home on Tuesday, March 19th to take on Bay Path in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 4pm.
