Sailing Gets Two Top 10 Finishes in Three Events

The Buccaneers sailing team took part in three events over the weekend at SUNY Maritime, MIT and Navy. In the events their best finish was seventh and they were 10th and 11th in the other two regattas.

At the off-shore regatta at Navy, the Shields Trophy, the Buccaneers finished seventh out of 10 teams in the cross regional event. The Buccaneers finished the weekend with 48 points for seventh place, seven points ahead of the College of Charleston in eighth with 55 points. Maritime was 12 points behind Merchant Marine who finished sixth with 36 points. Cal Maritime won the Shields Trophy with 21 points and URI and Navy tied for second place with URI winning the tie breaker. Of the seven races run in the regatta, the Buccaneers finished in the top five twice with a third and fourth place finish. Their worst finish was ninth and they were disqualified by one race.

In the Smith Trophy at MIT on Saturday the Buccaneers dinghy team finished in 10th place with 168 points from 18 events. The Bucs squeaked out the 10th place finish by one points ahead of Roger Williams in 11th with 169 points. Brown finished in ninth with 164 points, four points ahead of Maritime. MIT won their event with a commanding 52 total points. Boston College wasn't far behind in second with 57 points. URI came in third with 113 points overall. The Buccaneers won one race during the regatta and totaled two top five finishes. Their best finish was the first place finish and their worst was 15th. 

At the SUNY Fall Open at SUNY Maritime, the Buccaneers finished in 11th overall, 42 points head of South Carolina and were 15 points short of Washington College in 10th. Cornell won the Open with 73 points with Webb Institute placing second with 75 points. Finishing in third was Fordham with 96 points, one point ahead of Penn in fourth. Maritime failed to pick up a top five finish and had a best finish of seventh in two separate races.
