Sailing Competes in Hatch Brown Trophy at MIT

Rain or shine, hurricane Lee would not prevent the Bucs from competing at MIT's Hatch Brown Trophy. The competition was fierce with a lineup of D1 through D3 schools, with many nationally ranked competitors and previous world champ's trophy holders. The MMA Sailing team was prepared to give it their all at this 3 Division A event on the notorious Charles River. The morning saw the prevailing winds from the Northwest blowing 10 kts with gusts of 18 kts and would later die down and veer as the day progressed. The rotations were in 2 classes of boats, Zim420s and Fjs.

B division (Skipper 2/C Andrew Leshaw & Crew 3/C Andrew Dyment) kicked off the regatta with an OCS. Some stats for the day of racing were the following: averaging 3-4 tacks per upwind leg and 5-6 gear changes per run leg, accelerating with every roll, and gaining a boat on the downwind.

C division (Skipper 4/C Kevin Brooksbank & Crew 3/C Luke DuBois) starting shortly after, being Kevin's first collegiate event, he quickly learned youth sailing tactics are no match to the college level tactic. The veteran crew Luke made great tactical calls, essential fleet position, and boat positioning for the next shift.

A division (Skipper 1/C Tyler Egeli & Crew 1/C John Van Zanten) also started strong, followed by an intense day of sailing, fighting for every tack in the race to the finish. Their tactics and decisions demonstrated that this season's matchup will be one for the books.

The Buccaneers finished 17th in the Trophy with a total of 313 points, 23 points ahead of Connecticut College.

Maritime will be back on the water this weekend with regattas at Boston University, Tufts, and the University of Vermont.
