MacVarish Sets Pace As Men's Cross Country Posts 27th Place Finish At Westfield State James Earley Invitational

WESTFIELD, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country teams competed at the Westfield State James Earley Invitational on Saturday afternoon, as the Buccaneer men placed 27th overall while the Buccaneer women’s squad posted a 41st place finish in action at Stanley Park.

 

Senior Jake MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) set the pace on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as he covered the 8K layout in a time of 27:21.09 to finish 70th individually in a field of 431 competitors.  Juniors Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) and Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) were next in 99th and 187th place with respective times of 27:48.98 and 28:59.37, while freshmen Daniel Plumb (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Kyle Hansen (North Chelmsford, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 206th and 238th place times of 29:15.35 and 29:45.71.  Brandeis took top honors in the final team standings with 68 points, as Tufts (108) and Norwich (189) occupied the runner-up and third place spots.

 

On the women’s side, freshman Heather Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.) led the way for Massachusetts Maritime with a time of 28:21.57 over the 6K course, while senior Kylie Foster (Sandwich, Mass.) and junior Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) followed with times of 29:50.14 and 30:17.05.  Freshman Jill Ethier (Portsmouth, R.I.) and sophomore Sara Merzon (Rockland, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective times of 32:20.24 and 32:24.46 in a field of 457 runners from all divisions, as the University of New England took top honors with a score of 68 points to best runner-up Tufts (84) and third place Keene State (208).

 

Both Massachusetts Maritime squads head into Boston on Friday afternoon to compete at the Emmanuel Saints Invitational at Franklin Park that begins at 4:00 p.m.
