MacVarish's Eighth Place Performance Paces Men's Cross Country To Sixth Place Finish At University Of New England

BIDDEFORD, Maine --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country teams began their respective 2016 seasons with solid performances against a 14-team field at the University of New England Invitational on Saturday afternoon, as the Buccaneer men placed sixth overall while the Buccaneer women’s squad posted an eighth place finish in the event that took place at Rotary Park.

 

Senior Jake MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) set the pace on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as he covered the 8K layout in a time of 28:16 to record an eighth place individual finish in a field of 154 competitors.  Junior Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) followed in 13th place with a time of 28:45, while freshman Daniel Plumb (Hopkinton, Mass.) recorded a 24th place finish in his inaugural collegiate race with a time of 29:31.  Freshman Kyle Hansen (North Chelmsford, Mass.) and junior Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 51st and 56th place times of 31:03 and 31:29, as host University of New England took top honors in the final team standings with 75 points to edge out runner-up Wentworth (79) and third place Plymouth State (89).

 

Senior Mara Footit (Wilbraham, Mass.) led the way in the women’s race for Massachusetts Maritime with a 28th place time of 21:57 over the 5K course, while freshman Meaghan Hamilton (Braintree, Mass.) followed in 74th place with a time of 24:20 in her first collegiate competition.  Junior Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) was next in 99th place with a time of 26:08, while freshman Heather Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.) and sophomore Jaleni Rodriguez (Brandon, Fla.) closed out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 106th and 133rd place times of 26:48 and 38:06.  The University of New England also claimed the women’s crown with a team score of 19 points, topping runner-up Worcester State (87) and third place Endicott (97) by nearly 80 points combined.

 

Both Massachusetts Maritime squads head to North Dartmouth, Mass. next Saturday morning for the UMass Dartmouth Shriners Invitational that begins at 11:15 a.m.
