MacVarish Sets Pace For Second Straight Week As Men's Cross Country Finishes 18th At UMass Dartmouth Invitational

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country teams recorded solid performances against squads from across all divisions at the 44th Annual UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday afternoon, as the Buccaneer men placed 18th while the Buccaneer women finished 33rd overall in the competition.

 

Senior Jake MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) set the pace on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as he covered the 8K layout in a time of 26:47.56 to finish 48th in a field of 242 runners.  Junior Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) followed in 84th place with a time of 27:26.53, while freshman Daniel Plumb (Hopkinton, Mass.) was next in 113th place in a time of 28:02.99.  Junior Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) and freshman Kyle Hansen (North Chelmsford, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 155th and 162nd place finishing times of 29:07.97 and 29:21.99, as Division II American International took top honors in the final team standings with 52 points to edge runner-up Connecticut College (60) and third place Stonehill (99) for the crown.

 

Senior Mara Footit (Wilbraham, Mass.) led the way on the women’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as her 108th place time of 20:32.87 came in a field of 275 runners over the 5K course.  Freshmen Meaghan Hamilton (Braintree, Mass.) and Heather Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.) followed in 199th and 226th place, respectively, with times of 22:45.65 and 23:44.08, while junior Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) and sophomore Myat Smith (Sanford, Fla.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 254th and 261st place finishing times of 26:04.74 and 27:16.70.  Brandeis claimed the team title over runner-up Stonehill by 12 points (99-111), while Trinity finished third in the final standings.

 

Both Massachusetts Maritime squads travel to Wenham, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete at the Gordon Pop Crowell Invitational that begins at 10:45 a.m.
