MacVarish Places 17th Individually As Men's Cross Country Finishes Fifth At 2016 MASCAC Championships

LEOMINSTER, Mass. --  Seniors Mara Footit (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Jake MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) posted respective top 17 performances for Massachusetts Maritime at the 2016 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships that took place Saturday afternoon at the Doyle Conservation Center, as the Buccaneer men’s placed fifth overall while the Buccaneer women posted a sixth place team finish.

 

MacVarish covered the 8K layout in a time of 27:36 to finish 17th individually on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a 24th place performance from junior Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) in a time of 28:13.  Freshman Daniel Plumb (Hopkinton, Mass.) was next in 41st place with a time of 29:12, while junior Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) and freshman Kyle Hansen (North Chelmsford, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 47th and 49th place times of 29:36 and 29:47.  Westfield State claimed the MASCAC team title with a score of 34 points, as the Owls bested host Fitchburg State by 16 points and third place Bridgewater State by 28 points in the final standings.

 

Footit narrowly missed earning all-conference accolades on the women’s side with a 12th place finishing time of 20:45 for Massachusetts Maritime, as she finished just eight seconds out of the top 10 over the 5K course.  Freshman Meaghan Hamilton (Braintree, Mass.) was next in 43rd place with a time of 22:20, while fellow freshman Heather Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.) followed with a 63rd place time of 24:02.  Junior Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) and sophomore Myat Smith (Sanford, Fla.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 71st and 79th place times of 25:15 and 26:26, as Westfield State took the MASCAC crown with a score of 24 points to top both runner-up Worcester State (57) and third place Bridgewater State (63).

 

The Massachusetts Maritime men’s squad will head to Westfield, Mass. on Saturday, November 12th for the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships that begin at Noon, while today’s race marked the finale of the Buccaneer women’s schedule, as Head Coach Elizabeth Sullivan’s Buccaneers enjoyed posted three top eight performances and captured their first-ever team title at the Travis Fuller Invitational back on October 1st.
