BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Jake MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) captured his second individual title in third years as Massachusetts Maritime posted a perfect score of 15 points to take top honors for a third straight year in the 12th Annual Lt. Travis J. Fuller Men’s Cross Country Invitational that was run alongside the Cape Cod Canal Saturday morning.

 

Rivier and Newbury tied for the runner-up spot in the final team standings with 69 points each, as the Raiders took second place over the Nighthawks by virtue of having the highest scoring individual runner.  Eastern Nazarene was fourth with 87 points, while Anna Maria, Mount Ida and Pine Manor did not register team scores.

 

MacVarish covered the 7K layout in a time of 23:33 for the Buccaneers, who claimed the first five and seven of the top 10 individual finishes in the race.  Junior Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) followed in the runner-up spot with a time of 23:47, while junior Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) was third in a time of 23:56.  Freshmen Daniel Plumb (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Kyle Hansen (North Chelmsford, Mass.) rounded out Massachusetts Maritime’s team score with respective fourth and fifth place finishes of 24:14 and 24:17, while junior Ryan McNeal (Canton, Ga.) and freshman Douglas Cleary (Pocasset, Mass.) added respective eighth and ninth place marks of 24:54 and 25.58.

 

Eastern Nazarene senior Greg Whitney (Henniker, N.H.) posted a sixth place time for the Lions of 24:27, while Mount Ida senior Ryan Burch (Greenwich, N.Y.) placed seventh for the Mustangs with a time of 24:35.  Rivier freshman Tristian Givens (Broad Brook, Conn.) rounded out the top 10 individual performers with 10th place time of 25:48.

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Westfield, Mass. next Saturday afternoon to compete at the Westfield State James Earley Invitational that begins at Noon.
