WENHAM, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country teams enjoyed solid performances at the Gordon Pop Crowell Invitational on Saturday afternoon, as the Buccaneer men finished as the runner-up to the University of New England while the Buccaneer women placed seventh overall in the competition.

 

Senior Jake MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) set the pace in the men’s race for Massachusetts Maritime, as he covered the 8K layout in a time of 27:57 that was good for fifth place in a field of 100 runners, while junior Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) also recorded a top 10 individual performance by placing an eighth place time of 28:05.  Junior Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) was next in 17th place with a time of 28:54, while freshmen Kyle Hansen (North Chelmsford, Mass.) and Daniel Plumb (Hopkinton, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 19th and 30th place times of 29:05 and 29:43.  UNE claimed the team crown with a score of 36 points, as Massachusetts Maritime edged out host Gordon by one point (76-77) for the runner-up spot in the 12-team field.

 

Freshman Meaghan Hamilton (Braintree, Mass.) led the way on the women’s side for Massachusetts Maritime by placing 41st in a field of 120 runners, as she covered the 5K course in a time of 21:45.  Freshman Heather Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.) followed in 68th place with a time of 23:43, while junior Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) and senior Kylie Foster (Sandwich, Mass.) recorded respective 76th and 77th place finishing times of 24:44 and 24:45.  Senior Celeste Menard (Annandale, Va.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with an 87th place time of 26:45, as the University of New England also took top team honors among 13 competitors in the event with a score of 20 points to outdistance runner-up Gordon (79)and third place Emerson (84).

 

Massachusetts Maritime will host the 12th Annual Lt. Travis J. Fuller Invitational next Saturday morning alongside the Cape Cod Canal on campus, as the women’s race begins at 10:00 a.m. followed by the men’s race at 10:30 a.m.
