WORCESTER, Mass. --  Senior Alex Teal (Malden, Mass.) fired a complete-game five-hitter and struck out 10 to lead Worcester State to a 6-0 nightcap victory and a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Rockwood Park, as the Lancers received three hits and four RBI from junior Dan Ubele (Tyngsboro, Mass.) to notch a 14-10 opening game triumph.

The host Lancers (14-17, 6-4 MASCAC) scored five times in their first at-bat of the opener, as an RBI double by sophomore Zach George (Attleboro, Mass.) and a run-scoring triple by sophomore Rob MacDonald (Waltham, Mass.) were followed by a two-run two-bagger off the bat of senior Nick Gezotis (Westfield, Mass.), who scored on Ubele’s RBI single.  Worcester State used an eight-run third inning outburst to seemingly take control of the contest, as that rally was highlighted by Ubele’s two-run single, an RBI double by senior Kurt Sabacinski (Worcester, Mass.) and George’s RBI triple, but the visiting Buccaneers (7-16, 3-7 MASCAC) answered back with a nine-run rally in the fourth to close back to within four.  Senior Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.) belted a pair of homers in the frame (his first two round-trippers of the season), including a lead-off shot and a three-run blast with one out in the frame that made it a 13-9 game, and Massachusetts Maritime also received a two-run double from junior Matt Pelletier (Bradford, Mass.) as well as RBI singles by junior Brendan O’Kane (Pocasset, Mass.) and sophomore Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) as part of the outburst that saw the visitors send 12 batters to the plate.

The Buccaneers crept to within three at 13-10 in the fifth on an RBI double by junior Bob Lee (Braintree, Mass.), but the Lancers got that run back in the sixth on another Ubele single that accounted for his fourth RBI of the contest and account for the final score.  Sabacinski, George and MacDonald each had three hits and combined to drive in five runs in the opening victory for Worcester State, which also received two hits from Gezotis and sophomore Cody Osburn (Fair Oaks, Calif.) as part of a 17-hit attack.  Senior Nick Bonofiglio (Worcester, Mass.) went the distance to earn his second win of the season for the hosts, allowing eight earned runs and fanning eight along the way.  Lee paced the visitors’ 11-hit attack with three safeties, while Genereux and freshman Matt King (Scituate, Mass.) added two hits in the opener.  Sophomore Zacary Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) struck out one over two-plus innings of work on the mound for Massachusetts Maritime in falling to 0-3 on the season.

Sabacinski gave the Lancers a 2-0 third inning lead in the nightcap with an RBI groundout and a run-scoring single, and Worcester State extended that margin to 5-0 in the fifth on RBI singles by George and MacDonald to go with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Osburn.  Sophomore Steve Wallace (Auburn, Mass.) closes out the hosts’ scoring with an RBI single in the sixth, as both he and Osburn collected two hits each as part of nine-hit attack.  Teal took care of the rest on the mound for the Lancers in going the distance and improving to 5-4 on the spring.

Rosano, King, senior Zachary Sullivan (Barnstable, Mass.), junior Ben Maher (Plymouth, Mass.) and freshman Everett Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.) each recorded singles in the nightcap setback for the Buccaneers, as sophomore T.J. Notarangelo (Foxboro, Mass.) allowed seven hits and struck out two over 4 1/3 innings of work in suffering his first setback in three decision on the season for the visitors.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Waltham, Mass. on Sunday afternoon for a non-league doubleheader with Lasell that begins at Noon, while Worcester State travels to Fitchburg, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon to take on Fitchburg State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference twinbill beginning at 2:00 p.m.
