BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Tyler Smith (Bellingham, Mass.) scattered five hits and struck out seven over six innings to lead Massachusetts Maritime a 4-1 non-league college baseball victory over Emerson Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

The host Buccaneers (5-7) grabbed a 1-0 second inning lead when senior Aram Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) singled, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single off the bat of freshman Everett Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.), and Massachusetts Maritime extended that margin to 2-0 in the third when sophomore Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) rapped a two-out triple and scored on an ensuing single by senior Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.).  The visiting Lions (0-15) sliced their deficit in half in the fourth on a bases-loaded RBI fielder’s choice groundout by sophomore Malcolm Kelner (Minnetonka, Minn.) that plated freshman Steven Cameron (Lansdale, Pa.), but the hosts took advantage of a pair of Emerson errors to tack on two insurance runs in the sixth when Mulhern and fellow senior Zachary Sullivan (Barnstable, Mass.) crossed the plate to close out the scoring.

Mulhern and Rosano each had two hits as a part of a six-hit attack in the triumph for Massachusetts Maritime, as Smith improved to 2-1 on the season for the hosts.  Freshman Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn.) worked around a pair of hits in the ninth to fan a pair and pick up his second save of the spring for the Buccaneers, who registered a combined 10 strikeouts on the day.  Junior Cal Ciarcia (Dennis, Mass.) collected two of Emerson’s five hits in the setback, as freshman Jack Caportorto (Brielle, N.J.) went the distance on the mound for the Lions in allowing two earned runs and registering a pair of strikeouts in falling to 0-2 on the season.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Salem State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at Noon, while Emerson travels to Standish, Maine on Wednesday afternoon to take on Saint Joseph’s (Maine) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader that also begins at Noon.
